Best android free GPS map for Bangkok to use in taxi , bus , walking and location now !

Featured Replies

Hi

i would like to find a Android GPS map for Bangkok , in English and Thai

it would be nice that when I am out and in a taxi and I have an idea where I am ,

if I see someplace I might want to return to I can click something on the app and it will save it ,

also a trip report might be useful

and the MOST important is a way to find "where I am now" so I can find my way home when the birds ate my breadcrumbs !

I am using a Nexus 4 if it matters :)

thanks for your ideas

The built-in Google maps does everything you ask and more, it even has bus and MRT routes.

If you don't have a data connection you can even download sections of the map for offline use.

Download google maps. Easiest to use.

is there a way to just download the Bangkok map ?

and how do you do "where am I now " or my trail of bread crumbs of where I have been....

You download the whole world. And yes i shows you where you are currently at as long as you have GPS and or wifi

I do not think you can download the world on google map , only small areas

but is there any other apps that do the same thing ?

Download google maps and you will get the entire world. Trust me, Ive used it in several countries with success. I also have it on my phone

You don't download the whole world to the storage space on your phone. You browse it online, with your Internet connection

When I try to download a section of Thailand, I get the message that this area is not available.

With Italy, there is no problem downloading any area.

Has anybody been able to download an area of Thailand?

I have not found a way to download and save offline maps with Google Maps. There are third party apps that can save tiles of Google Map images, but they are fixed zoom scale and not offering turn by turn navigation. Therefore I have switched to Sygic for this requirement. It's not free as requested by the o/p but it can be if you download from specific web sites. That said it is also so useful, the cost might be worth it.

Have a look at:

MapFactor: GPS Navigation

OsmAnd Maps & Navigation

on the Google play market

Yes, these are OK if you can get by with OSM. I occasionally use Mapfactor but resort to Google Maps or Sygic when I need the fine details.

BKKdreaming, do you have a data package on your phone for mobile Internet access? If you have, you may find the free app My Tracks useful, but it does not have all street names also in Thai.

For offline use, Sygic is available, but free only for a 15-day trial. Back Country Navigator, free, is basically intended for hiking and has some streets only in English, some only in Thai, and some not labelled at all.

Hi

well I have not really needed GPS much this trip,

I have Waze and Mapquest that both work it you have Data on your phone, and work under the BTS on sukhumvit.....

but I ate up all my data (1GB) yesterday listening to music on Youtube.....ooops

, well that was the 3d data I still have EDGE

But I would like something that works offline to use on an old phone and throw it in my friends truck.....

Correction: Back Country Navigator does not display the map without an Internet connection.

Google Maps has wonderful details (even if you have to ignore some useless business names). But you need to be online. You CAN download areas for offline viewing. But once offline, Google Maps is of very very limited use - at one point, no street names were shown, and in many trials with G Maps offline, i never knew what to expect - there were different restrictions each time, even though they were always severe and making it useless.

I'd happily pay a lot to use Google Maps fully offline including the satellite pictures which are so useful in the countryside.

I tried the Here maps from Nokia/Microsoft, but in my area they were much inferior to Google Maps.
