Doctor is top career choice for Thai kids

Many youngsters put family above making money; education also a key ambition, recent survey shows

BANGKOK: -- FOR A sixth year in a row, Thai children chose becoming a doctor as the top job, while becoming a soldier is the "coolest".

These choices were revealed in the 6th Adecco Thailand Children's Career Survey yesterday.

The survey also showed that the main reason youngsters wanted to become doctors was because they want to help people, as well as look after their families and earn a good income. The other top career choices were soldier, policeman, teacher and engineer.

The other careers that appear to have become popular this year are businessman, football player, chef or entering the entertainment industry with jobs like singer, musician, TV/movie star, model or presenter.

Children also showed interest in other professions such as agriculturist, programmer, designer, stylist, architect, professional gaming, cartoonist, hairdresser, make-up artist, detective and reporter.

Some children had specific reasons for their dream careers. For instance, one girl said she wanted to write novels because she wants to become as famous as Conan Doyle - the creator of Sherlock Holmes, while one boy said he wants to become an astronaut because he wants to walk on the moon. Another boy said he wants to become a scientist because he was interested in learning new things.

As for the coolest job, the answers were divided into two groups: one group chose the "coolest" job as their dream career; while the other group's choice of cool jobs were different from their dream jobs. For instance, one child said he wanted to be a football player, but believed that pilots were the coolest.

Asked what they would do if they were to become prime minister, the top five choices were developing the country, helping the poor, improving the education system, bringing peace to the country and ensuring everybody is employed.

Adecco explained that children were showing more interest in politics and national issues because they are getting more of a chance to learn what's been happening in the Kingdom over the past few years.

Also, more than 97 per cent chose spending more time with their family over making money. Those who chose being with their families said money could be made at anytime, while those who chose making money, said they wanted to do this for their family or to better their education.

The survey also showed that during weekends, most children spent their time going to tutorial schools, playing video games, watching TV, relaxing, doing family activities or helping parents with chores.

While children in the suburbs mostly spend weekends with their family, those in the city spend their free time taking extra classes.

Tutorial schools not a happy activity

When asked how they want to spend their leisure hours, most chose staying or travelling with their family, playing video games or sports. This revealed that although most children spend weekends going to tutorial schools, it is not one of their top 10 happiest activities, Adecco said.

The survey also showed that more than half of the young respondents considered education as very important and that they were looking forward to studying hard this year.

More than half of the children said Thailand was their top choice for a place to stay, followed by Japan and the United States.

"The survey shows that Thai children's choices are becoming wider. Previously, few children chose becoming a TV/movie star, singer, make-up artist, hairdresser or professional gaming as a career choice, but now these jobs are becoming more popular.

"This might be because of the television, as it is widening children's perspective. For instance, televised talent shows are making children understand that there are many ways of making money and becoming famous," Adecco Group Thailand's regional director Tidarat Kanchanawat said.

Many children put family above making money and how many families put making money above their children ?

Anyway isn't making money to help the family what children are inculcated with ?

The most needed profession in Thailand that needs fresh intellect and skill is journalism. Alas no Thai kids named this profession as a dream or desire. Maybe Thai kids have no idea that journalism is in fact a profession. Difficult for them to see anything to emulate in the Thai press.

If the children really aspired to making money then the obvious career choice would be that of policeman. Plus it does not require much in the way of knowledge, skill, motivation, pro hard work.

Cops do need to make big money as apart from personal and family needs there's the small matter of buying promotion to get further up the money making chain.

I think that was exactly what Fiddlesticks was inferring in his post.

Shame the ones going overseas will have to study for another few years when they get there to get up to standard.

You do know whos treating you in hospital here right ? thumbsup.gif

To specialise, they really do need to study overseas.....my orthopaedic surgeon did his general here in Thailand......

He's genuine and very good....but there's a lot here that are mediocre and less....really have to research to find the right person.

I prefer to be treated by doctors who have a natural talent for it rather than ones who are just doing it for the money.

Who paints better pictures? Natural born artists? Or people who have done a 4 year art course? (With a "No Fail" policy)

I wonder what all those doctors and professional people will eat as NO ONE wants to become a rice farmer. Oh don't worry there will be no water in the future to grow rice anyways. If no water to grow rice the rich will be able to buy up yet more land on the cheap.

A Thai woman went to the gynecologist, who told her she was in perfect health, with the body of an 18 year-old.

She was so excited she ran home to tell her Farang husband.

"Oh yeah? What about your big ass?"

"He not talk about you."

Nobody wants to be a movie star and smash up yellow Lamborghinis? No one wants to be a doctor. That's bs. Put family ahead of money? Then they don't want to be coppers. Truth is that they all want to be teachers. This will change as they get older. They will want to be jet-ski renters.

sadly, doctors are not there for your health or to help you

they are the DRUG pushers of the pharma industry ...

go with a small cough or whatever ... they will push you ANTIBIOTICS

at inflated prices

which only help you to become resistant to them, as useless for many ills

so how much cash has to change in a brown envelope to get one of them doctor degrees without much knowledge...

there is a reason why THAI doctors, only can work as a nurse in western country ...
