An Australian man wanted on pedophile charges has been arrested in Thailand and will be repatriated, Thai immigration officials said Tuesday.

Escaped paedophile to front court

March 1, 2004

A convicted paedophile who spent nearly 13 years on the run is to face a court in Perth today.

Paul Thompson was recaptured in Bali on Friday by Indonesian authorities who had worked with Australian Federal Police on a long running paedophile investigation.

Thompson escaped from the former Pardelup Prison Farm, near Mount Barker in southern WA, shortly after he was convicted in WA of a string of child sex offences in 1991- at the time he still had two years of his sentence to run.

It is understood Thompson, who is also known as Paul Spraggs and Paul Jarvis, has outstanding warrants in other states.

Federal Justice Minister Chris Ellison has foreshadowed an inquiry into how Thompson managed to evade capture.

AFP recaptures escaped paedophile

February 29, 2004

Indonesian and Australian Federal Police investigating international paedophile rings have re-captured fugitive Western Australian sex offender Paul Thompson in Bali.

Thompson, 55, is in custody in Perth after being brought back from Indonesia last night:

He was convicted in WA in 1991 of seven offences of aggravated indecent assault of a person under 16, three of wilful exposure, breach of bail and providing a false name and address.

He escaped from prison shortly after his sentence and has been on the run for nearly 13 years.

Thompson was arrested by Indonesian police two days ago in Bali, deported yesterday and will face a Perth court tomorrow.

Federal Justice Minister Senator Chris Ellison says Thompson's arrest and rapid deportation demonstrates the close working relationship between authorities in Indonesia and Australia.

He says Thompson's arrest sends a clear message to paedophiles that they will be tracked down wherever they operate.

"It's of great concern that he escaped in the first place and has been on the run for such a long time but it sends a very clear message that no matter where you go, where you try to hide, the law will catch up with you," he said.

It is not yet clear if Thompson faces further charges.

A particularly bad one is caught. Let's hope he stays caught.
