Visa requirement changes @ Thai consulate in Jakarta

Featured Replies

For the past 2 yrs I have been visiting Jakarta before going onto Thailand, and so I have always got my Thai tourist visa here. I submitted my return plane tickets, a copy of my bank statement, filled in the application and paid my $35 USD. 2 days later I return and get the visa, no issues.

I went this Monday to get another tourist visa before flying onto Thailand and now they also require a hotel booking. You can't apply for a tourist visa without it.

There is a document posted on the bulletin board (see attachment). It states that along with the other items required (plane tickets, bank statement) you also need a Hotel reservation. This new policy started 18 Aug 2014.

I talked to the guy behind the glass (same guy each day), a Mr Worrawait. Asked him to show me documentation from the Immigration Department in Bangkok that verified this new “rule”. He said there is none. This new “rule” only applies to the Thai embassy in Jakarta.

He further explained that the length of the Hotel reservation needed is dependant on the length of visa you apply for. He said if you apply for a 15 day visa then only 8 days hotel booking is required. Since I applied for a 60 day visa, a 30 day hotel booking was required. Hotel bookings received by email are not valid, only "proper" hotel bookings with the letterhead, hotel address, phone number, and contact person who made the booking for you is valid.

So, I contacted the guesthouse I usually stay @ in Thailand and got them to confirm a 30 day booking. They said sure and sent the info by email only. Then I used this info to “create” a related document using the guesthouse logo/header and address, contact info (all from the guesthouse website). Printed it off and submitted it along with the other documents.

I did eventually get my visa, (which now costs $560K rupiah = $45 USD) but the bottom line is if you can, apply for a Thai visa somewhere else.

Hope this helps.

Thailand get more ridiculous by the day.

Embassies and consulates fall under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Immigrations and police are under Ministry of the Interior. Obviously they serve the same government, but immigrations would not send instructions to an embassy.

Thailand get more ridiculous by the day.

Only from the perspective of petulant farang who make blanket comments without any knowledge of why rules are changed ... usually to deal with abuse of tourist visas or whatever. A relatively small number of people trying to game the system can cause procedures to become more onerous and they end up being a burden to both legitimate tourists and those trying to use tourist visas for purposes other than tourism. This of course can be exacerbated by a sense of entitlement on the part of some farang who react by finding the inconvenience caused to be "ridiculous." A bit like children who find adult decisions to be arbitrary and not fair.
