Government urged to prevent new smokers

BANGKOK, 13 January 2015 (NNT) - People with laryngeal cancer and medical associations have called on the government to legislate new tobacco laws to reduce the number of new smokers.

A group of people who lost larynx because of smoking-based cancer and others from various medical associations have issued a public statement against the sales of cigarettes to young people.

They believed that the new tobacco legislation will not affect tobacco farmers since the crop is only grown for domestic consumption.

More than 700 organizations and Thai civilians have signed a petition encouraging the cabinet to quickly enforce the new law.

There are currently around 115,000 names in the petition who wish to encourage smokers to give up smoking and prevent younger people to pick up the habit.

Special Report: Holistic School in Hospital helps brighten child education future

BANGKOK, 13 January 2014 (NNT) – Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health (QSNICH), was established on June 24, 1954 as a children’s hospital. Now more than half a century later, QSNICH provides complete health services, starting with pre-natal patients and continuing up to their eighteenth birthday. The branch of medicine treating children and their illnesses is known as pediatrics.

QSNICH is the only hospital in Thailand dealing solely with the treatment of pediatric patients, and is the leading provider of health care for children in the kingdom. The hospital also saw the need to offer children a fulfilling life while they are receiving treatment.

Most important was to provide a stimulating environment offering progressive education, so that a child suffering from a prolonged illness could still keep up with their classes.

Such an approach to all the needs of a long-term patient, is known as holistic care.

The Holistic School in Hospital program of QSNICH started in 1997 and soon expanded to another 23 networking hospitals nation wide.

Meanwhile, His Majesty the King had become aware of the educational needs of many children in distant locations, or in difficult situations. His Majesty had resolved to use technology to reach such children and provide them with an education delivered by satellite transmissions.

H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej implemented the technology of Distance Learning via Satellite (DLTV). Later as the Internet became the modern means of communication and learning, H.R.H. Princess Sirindhorn introduced a program of e-Learning, compiling over 1,300 lessons and uploading them into the eDL-Square system, so that anyone without normal access to educational lessons could access the system for their educational benefit.

For children who must remain in hospital for an extended period, the Holistic School in Hospital program is made available. Classes are held in a room with other children or individually at the bedside, depending on the level of illness.

Duangkamon Ngaokom, a former patient of the Holistic School in Hospital program revealed that back when she was a 10-year-old she suffered from Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder characterized by abnormal formation of hemoglobin. The treatment meant the removal of her spleen and continual visits to the doctor on more than 20 occasions. She was later affected by Gastrointestinal bleeding, due to pressure on the liver and varicose veins in the gastrointestinal tract. Her symptoms forced her to quit her education at the end of 6th grade. Being hospitalized but still wanting to go to school, she was introduced to the Holistic School in Hospital program in 2004. She studied many subjects through the e-DLTV system. Her renewed studies allowed her to graduate from high school and she is now attending university and working as an assistant pharmacist to support herself.

Looking back Duangkamon remembered the learning atmosphere in the hospital was very attractive and the lessons engaging and not stressful. Some fun activities meant that she didn’t feel lonely or depressed. She now says I hope that there will be more computers to support the number of patients needing to study in hospitals.

Duangkamon’s story is one of many successful stories of how the project has helped children across the country continue their general education, and shows that prolonged diseases and illnesses need no longer prevent children from achieving their future career goals.

In this way eDLTV and many other CIS programs designed for children who are in hospital for treatment of chronic illness, help make learning possible with the collaboration of three ministries namely: the Information and Communication Technology Ministry (ICT), the Ministry of Education (MOE), and the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) who design and deliver the educational courses.

Meanwhile, the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health is meeting compliance with International Standards, by 2016, confirming its position as Thailand’s Child Friendly Hospital taking care of pediatric patients and their families.

Smuggled carcasses, meat destroyed
By Digital Content

14211243416011-640x390x1.jpg

PATHUM THANI, Jan 13 -- The Department of Livestock Development burnt 85 tons of smuggled carcasses and meat to control diseases and maintain the standard of Thai imports and exports.

The destruction took place yesterday at a livestock department facity in Pathum Thani's Bang Kradi sub-district.

Government agencies including the Department of Livestock Development and the Customs Department seized the smuggled goods during November and December last year.

They consisted of 13 tons of pig kidneys from the Netherlands, 23 tons of liver from South Korea and 49 tons of inner organs of cows from India.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Pitipong Phuengboon Na Ayudhaya said such smuggled goods posed high risks of dangerous animal-to-human diseases in the country and their destruction was a must. He estimated that the smuggling caused at least 100 million baht worth of damage to the national economy annually.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives ordered the Department of Livestock Development to carefully examine such exports and imports at all checkpoints to ensure Thailand's cargo handling standard and status as a global center of agricultural products. (MCOT online news)
