Tourist Visa Expiry Date?

Featured Replies

Last month I got a 30 day extension on my Tourist Visa, the new expiry date showing is now Jan 19.

I have heard that I need to leave Thailand on Jan 18 to avoid an overstay fine of Bt500, not the day stated on the extension i.e. Jan 19.

Is this true?

I was intending to cross the border at Poipet on Jan 19 but want to check if I should in fact go on Jan 18.

Thanks.

You must leave the country before midnight on the 19th. I suggest planning on the 18th though just in case you are delayed getting to the border.

If you are going to leave to use another entry from your visa be sure you do it on or before the enter before date on your visa.

Hello Joe

So will you end up overstaying if you leave Thailand on Jan. 19 on your visa-exempt stamp

that is dated Jan.19 as expiry date, for example? I thought you could even depart from

Thailand on the day it expired without overstaying no problem.

No, the 19th would be perfectly fine. But the advise is to leave the 18th, just in case things go wrong. Cars do breakdown and many other unforseenthings can happen.

Thanks for the clarification Joe, I will go early morning on Jan 19 as I have a prior engagement on Jan 18.

Joe says you must leave the country before midnight or 12am on the 19th and so this means you'll overstay if you depart from Thailand
after midnight or 12am on the 19th, doesn't it?

Edited by Too

Yes, than it would be the 20th and one would be on overstay.

Mario2008

So we must leave the country by Jan. 19th before midnight or 12am on Jan. 20th, technically speaking, right?

Edited by Too

Before 0000 on a 24 hour clock or 12 pm on a 12 hour clock.

Actually to make it clear I think Joe means expiry is at 24:00 on the 19th on a 24 hour clock. i.e. must leave BEFORE 00:00 on 20th.

It can be 24:00 or 00:00 dependent how you want to say it. On a digital clock it is 00:00.

I mean before 00:00 on a 24hr clock.

So I can leave Thailand before the land borders are closed on the evening of Jan. 19 without overstaying, right?

I just want to be sure.

Thank you.

Yet that is what I said.

Sorry to contradict Ubonjoe from whom I have learnt so much on this forum.

00:00 and 24:00 are not quite the same thing on a 24 hour clock. 00:00 is the start of a day and 24:00 the end.

This is why most airlines avoid this time for schedules choosing 23:55 on 19th or 00:05 0n 20th.

(Ex airline pilot, very used to 24 hour clock)

Hello Joe!

Thank you for your confirmation. This is a bit complicated, though.

"This is a bit complicated, though."

It wasn't complicated before this thread started going round and round in circles.

Ex pilot and you don't know there is no such time like 24:00 ? There is 23:59 after which there is 00:00.

Colloquially however 24 is the same as 00. If that's the start or the end of day depends by your schedule.

Paz, I get a bit fed up with the snide comments on this forum when people post something meant to help.

If you had spent a millisecond researching the 24 hour clock you would have seen ther is indeed 24:00 to distinguish between start and end of a particular day/date.

I was indeed an airline captain with a major airline and can do without your questioning my credentials without any evidence, you sorry man.

I did not question anything and I respect people that works in air transport whatever their position.

I stand by my opinion if you allow me.
