Popular Post puukao
I spent "x" amount of hours researching all the SE Asian countries, and Thailand wins, again. I've been to many of the other countries, and they all have a nice charm about them; many positives, and of course a few negatives. I won't debate anyone who chooses to live there over here....as Buddha might say, "you already KNOW the answer of what makes you happy. don't fight it." My plan was to go to S. Korea, but the paperwork is turning into a 4-5 month process. I'm sure I will like the food in S. Korea, and likely the people, while their language is fascinating and alphabet extremely easy to learn. However, I'm not so sure I will enjoy the cold for an extended period of time. I don't enjoy the heat for an extended period of time, either. Nonetheless, I keep thinking about Thailand and all the roads on my bike I have not yet ridden.... My next trip might include a bike ride from CM to Malaysia, and back. I've already done the CM to Myanmar trip, straight north from what i remember. anyhow, that's why i want to go back..... I know we all bash this place over and over, but we all keep coming back, and back, and back... just be honest with yourself and admit there is no better place in SE Asia...and sleep well knowing that. ok, back to the thread, "my gf stole my bike and burned my passport, should i marry her?"
Popular Post ThaiPauly
Don't know about the "coming back" bit , but certainly most of us choose to stay here rather than another south east asian country. Many of us have wives or long term girlfriends here, some of them have kids as well which makes it difficult just to up sticks and move somewhere else. Thailand has a lot of positives, these are what I look for rather than the negatives (which I see a lot of on these forums). Happy here? It's not perfect but then where is? At the moment I'll take it

ggt
"my gf stole my bike and burned my passport, should i marry her?" By all means have a large traditional Thai wedding... Hide all the kitchen knives...and sleep with one eye open... I love your sense of humor...you will do just fine navigating all the Thai-made hassles aimed at making a farangs life a living paradise... Popular Post stopthegreed
The reason why so many people (not all) stay , is because they havn't been anywhere else. They get to Thailand, and its so different from where they come from, and so liberal, in many ways, they think its paradise. But they havn't seen the other paradise in other places, so they don't know any better. Thailand is a great country, But after spending over 9 years there, it is, sadly, not the place it used to be. Probably the most important thing is expense. Thailand is no longer considered cheap, like it used to be. In fact its expensive if your not careful. The people seem to have lost a lot of their charm, (and I know people will winge and say "well where I live in this little village in Issan, everyone is so nice",) it's not what it used to be. and they are money driven, ......... your money. So my advice would be, go to Thailand its a wonderful country, there are still a lot of nice people, in certain areas. But before you make a final choice, do go and visit the other Asian, countries, like Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia. Then make an informed choice.

Popular Post MisterTee
Thailand is the best if you avoid Bangkok and the tourist areas. Learn to speak the language, and mind your own business... it can be a very good life here.
Popular Post Lukecan
I'll tell you why Very cheap lodging options Vibrant nightlife It is very very safe if you use common sense, mind your own business no one will bother you. Relatively good infrastructure compared to surrounding countries. Relatively better lookng women compared to surrounding countries Sex Unlimited dining options Cheap cost of living Beautiful beaches Friendly people Avaibility of pork meat everyhwere( its harder to get it in Indonesia and Malaysia) Pragmatic country, you can nearly solve all your problems by shelling out some cash. It can override all those bureaucratic processes instantly. Overstayed? No problem, just pay the appropiate fine at the airport.

morpho
Vietnam is the place I can't stop going back to! As much as I enjoy living in Thailand, Vietnam is the place that fascinates me the most!. Why Vietnam, I haven't been ??? Been going to Vietnam since 2004...will be going back in Feb for 3 months. People (foreigners) I talk to either love it there or hate it...I am one who loves it. I just find the country, people, culture, etc. much more interesting. And personally I find most Vietnamese much friendlier than most Thais. After more than 3 years living in Chiang Mai, I'm making plans to move to Vietnam either later this year or next year if I can work out getting visas and some other things. I think it's all a matter of personal preference so I can only suggest that if you haven't been there, go check it out and form your own opinions.

The people speak English, and the beaches are truly stunning. Apart from rental accomodation, (In the Big Cities, Such as Cebu). which gets you a great rental price if you want to buy. Everything else is about half the price of Thailand. The ladies are great, its so refreshing to take someone out and have a laugh, because they understand you. There are exceptions of course. But in the main these girls are not money driven, they just want a better life, than the slums they are in at present. Give that to them and they will be so grateful, and what a turn on, to have someone speak to you in English when your having sex hahaha. "Gawd, what a flippin nightmare." Let's just say some people find it to be quite a challenge. Makes you wonder how they ever managed to earn a living if they're so easily over-whelmed. Certainly when you read some of the threads in the visa forum you wonder if some of the posters are allowed to cross the street without someone holding their hands.

As much as I enjoy living in Thailand, Vietnam is the place that fascinates me the most! i'm spending more and more time in vietnam as well. thailand has become to westernized/sexpat for my taste. especially bangkok, hated living in the sukhumvit area even for just a couple months and watching all these old prunes act like goofballs. But I definitely like going there for holiday...2 weeks next month. Enjoy! I completely understand where you are coming from. I went and for the first 2 Months, I was wondering if I had made the right choice. After all, all of my friends were in Thailand. I explained this to a girl I was with, and still am, and she asked me how many friends I had when I went to Thailand, I said none, and she just looked at me, and said, "is it not the same here"? i decided she was correct. I have been living here now for 1 year, I have made friends, and I could not wish for a better life style. It's very refreshing to ask your lady to bring you a loaf of bread back, and she does exactly that, instead of a can of coke hahahaha. i wouldn't change this girl for 10 girls in Thailand. I was going away for a Month and gave her 20,000 pesos for housekeeping ( about 15,000 Baht), she gave me half back and said it was too much. What a huge difference !!!
