NRC's six visions

BANGKOK: -- The National Reform Council will set six reform visions in all its proposals which are already completed for submission to the Constitution Drafting Committee, said council chairman Thienchay Kiranant today.

He listed the six reform visions as follows: democratic administration with the King as the head of state which is suitable for the Thai society; just and fair election; mechanism which can deal effectively with corruption problem; reform to eradicate disparities and to restore justice; bureaucratic mechanism capable of providing services to the people and strict enforcement of the laws in a just manner.

Mr Thienchay stressed that the reform whether it is short term or long term must incorporate the six visions.

He said from his 40 years of experience in the academia he had never seen such visions for the country being outlined as clearly as this time although none of them are new. However, he made clear that the reform visions are separate issue from reconciliation.

Mr Thienchay reiterated that in the crafting of the proposals and visions the NRC had always been receptive to the opinions of the people and had incorporated their opinions into the proposals and visions.

But he made clear that the NRC has nothing to do with economic issues which are within the responsibility of the government.

Much like "My six New Year's resolutions". Best intentions but no chance in hell of seeing any come to fruition. Also, love how these are so general since there won't be any chance of putting these pie-in-the-sky concept into a practical tactical plan. Sort of like saying 'We want world peace'.

And good luck achieving any of those reforms.

I will be dead and buried many decades before Thailand even starts to come close to achieving that list. There will be far too much resistance from all with vested interests for any of that to actually happen.

Just curious, what does "democratic administration with the King as the head of state which is suitable for the Thai society" mean?

One where eithee the Democrats win, or any other party is so handcuffed by rules and regs they can't achieve anything.

He listed the six reform visions as follows: (translation which is comprehensible to the non-elite)

  1. democratic administration ... which is suitable for the Thai society;
    1. not really democratic at all, but one that we can control
  2. just and fair election;
    1. Abhisit will finally be able to win
  3. mechanism which can deal effectively with corruption problem;
    1. backup plan in case Abhisit doesn't win
  4. reform to eradicate disparities and to restore justice;
    1. pretend we are doing something for the 'little people' ...
  5. bureaucratic mechanism capable of providing services to the people
    1. such as making it even easier to file LM cases against our 'enemies'
  6. strict enforcement of the laws in a just manner.
    1. streamline the persecution conviction process of our opposition

Would be great if the shin supporters actually had a forward vision of their own instead of just knocking everything.

why is it a favorite pejorative to call someone a shin supporter if they don't agree with the yellow military fascists who have a been ruining this country for a century ... or longer?

As for me, I am hardly a "Shin supporter" but I do support democracy and the human right that all societies have to self determination.

That in and of itself is a bit of a "vision", don't you think?

"democratic administration with the King as the head of state which is suitable for the Thai society"

From the military's viewpoint, it would seem that a permanent military rule is suitable to Thai society. Too bad the Thai society can't be allowed to make that decision. Maybe someday Thais won't ask for permission.

It's what the Thai people want. The 6 proposals seem quite normal and are a part of many democratic countries constitutions, morales and rules. The reform process is going to be exciting this year, hopefully many Thai people will get involved and solve the current political crisis. Thailand deserves a true democracy chosen by the people for the people.
