webfact Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Chiang Mai ready to get tough with rogue entertainment venue operatorsCHIANG MAI, 22 Jan 2015 (NNT) – Chiang Mai is poised to get tough with rogue entertainment venue operators and other service providers to improve the province’s image among visitors.Chiang Mai Governor Suriya Prasatbandit has instructed local authorities and police to inspect all types of entertainment venues on a daily basis to make sure that only licensed ones are allowed to operate. The attempt came in response to complaints about karaoke bars and transport service providers overcharging tourists. The governor, who described this type of operators as a social treat of Chiang Mai, disclosed that previous inspections had led to a closure of three unlicensed bars.Mr. Suriya admitted that some crooked karaoke bars still existed due to the help of bribe-taking authorities. From now on, entertainment venues with records of cheats will be blacklisted so that they will not be able to cause trouble again.Aside from illegally-run entertainment venues, authorities will keep a close watch on transport service providers to prevent them from ripping off tourists. Related agencies, meanwhile, are planning to impose more stringent measures to prevent the spread of unscrupulous activities among service operators. The governor has called on Chiang Mai residents to help with the mission to preserve the province’s reputation among visitors.-- NNT 2015-01-22

Just1Voice Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 It will open again shortly, with a sign stating: "Under New Management". What the sign won't tell you is that the "New Manager" is the younger brother of the old manager. 1
thhMan Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 If it doesnt hit the social networks, then it seems to not be actioned... 1
Preman Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Is anyone game enough to research and print a list showing who the actual owners of many of the clubs and bars are in Chiang Mai? Not the front Managers. The owners. Quite surprising really. Many senior people. Not just in Chiang Mai, but all over Thailand. Many law makers and their families. Nothing is going to change. The Governor knows that. Just saying what needs to be said to appease people. Appearances. Blah Blah Blah! 1
wowfactor10 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Thai government why bother? We just stop coming to your city and you can go sit your self in these bars with your respected families enjoy your night out !.

ggt Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Mr. Suriya admitted that some crooked karaoke bars still existed due to the help of bribe-taking authorities. Oh...No...tell me it is not so...now how are the Thai apologist going to spin this? This IS Thailand...
alfalfa19 Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Getting tough: When the BIB stop by to collect their usual tea money, they don't smile quite as broadly as usual, and advise the proprietors to tone down their antics for a few days.
Ulic Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 So you are saying the police are going to investigate the police owned karaoke bar. 1
chrisinth Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Such a nonsense intention. "..... has instructed local authorities and police to inspect all types of entertainment venues on a daily basis to make sure that only licensed ones are allowed to operate." So, they will be walking around checking licenses daily? Thats going to achieve a lot isn't it? This is saying (to me anyway) that if you have a license, you will not rip off customers, or your license allows you to rip off customers. IMHO, if they are serious about cracking down on these establishments, setup a hotline number, with a reaction force to be deployed immediately if they receive a complaint from tourists (or expats) that think they are being ripped off. Any interference from the establishment preventing the call should carry a serious punishment. Make this knowledge available to all establishments (can be done when making their daily license check). Making the hotline number available to tourists would also be a help, making the establishment display the number, like no smoking signs, would be a step ahead and prove Chiang Mai was serious about helping and not just passing hot air. 2
Cpkt8 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Applause for governor's effort to protect CM, but let's hope it's not going to be another NATO (No action talk only).

"Many senior people" - "Many law makers and their families." Come out with it, man... who are they? AD's recent departure has created an urgent need for an investigative reporter. Fame and fortune await the person courageous enough to take on the forces of evil here in Thailand. Will it be you?
Allseeingeye Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 getting tough with them? Does this mean taking an even bigger cut to turn a blind eye like you have been doing for decades? More lip service.Let's see one of these involved authorities get charged prosecuted and actually sentenced along with these thug owners and some of the accomplices that help beat these unsuspecting tourists for complaining.
Lupatria Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Chiang Mai is poised to get tough with rogue entertainment venue operators No worries here, they will leave out the venues operated and protected by the RTP
maidee Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 hey, in CM they don't have jetski's ... give them a break .... right ?
