I have a son that was born in Thailand to a Thai. We are now divorced (court ordered) and I control education. I am in Canada, but looking to come back to Thailand. I was told by the Thai Consulate in Toronto I can get a 90 day Non "O" visa as my son is with me and is Thai. I have his birth certificate and Thai passport.

If that is true how would I extend the visa once I am back in Thailand and what would I have to do? Do I have to show any other documents of financial records in Thailand.

Thanks for any help.

You can extend for 60 days with just the birth certificate, copy of his Thai ID card (if he's old enough) and house registration. fee Bt 1,900.

With the same plus Bt 40,000 in Thai bank or monthly income Bt 40,000 (can be from anywhere) you can extend for one year.

They don't need to see where the money comes from as long as it shows a balance of 40,000 and at least 40, 000 being deposited into account each month?

It's one or or the other. The income method is demonstrated with a letter or affidavit from your consulate in Thailand.

Let me correct a typo: It is either 400,000 in the bank (not 40,000) OR an income of 40,000 a month.

Money in the bank must be in an account in Thailand and you show it with a letter from the bank and updated bank book. Income is shown with tax documents if from within Thailand and if from abroad with a letter from your embassy.

No, you missed a zero there.

To get a extension you would need 400K in a Thai bank or be able to show a monthly income of 40K.

If I have an account with 400K in it. That would be enough? (i would not need anything else) and how long do I need to keep the money in that account?

Yes, that will be enough. (But always wise to have a bankbook which shows some cash flow so they see you have actual money to spend).

The rest of the paperwork will be about proving your relationship to your son, that you have parental responsibilities and that you are living together.

Money in the account in case of a child with Thai nationality does officially not need to be seasoned, but many offices ill require it to be seasoned just like when you apply based on marriage. That means I must be there 2 months before you apply.

But once the visa has been issued I can withdraw the money or they will they want to see it staying in the account for the whole year for when I apply the following year?

You can withdraw it, but it would be wise to wait until you have the actual extension. (You will apply and have to come back after 30 days to get the extension. They consider your application for 30 days to make some checks and get approval from higher up in the command. That is the standard process for people extending based on marriage or having a child).

You will need the money again for your next extension, but in the meantime you can withdraw it.
