Ivory traders, owners must register
THE SUNDAY NATION

BANGKOK: -- TRADERS, owners or people acquiring ivory extracted from domesticated elephants and relevant products are required to register the ivory with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) from March 22 until April 21.

Those failing to do so will face up to three years in prison and/or a maximum fine of Bt6 million.

DNP director-general Nipon Chotibal said that under the new law, which took effect on January 22, an individual must not have more than four pieces of ivory or ivory products in their possession while a household must not have more than 12 pieces weighing no more than 0.5kg in total.

These items cannot be sold, traded, gifted or transferred but could be inherited, he said.

People wishing to trade ivory or relevant products must apply for a special permit with the DNP's director-general, as must people wishing to export or import the items, he said.

Not enough. Ban all sales of ivory or else nothing will change.

Ivory traders, owners must register

or in other words, pay more money under the table to avoid punishment,.... the Face saving way of conveying the message Internationallywhistling.gifwhistling.gif

The people who own ivory will take no notice of this new regulation.....possibly the traders will change, to a degree......but....it will not stop!

ten years in jail sounds better.

Thailand, the hub of african/asian ivory trade, and one of the main perpetrators in the extinction of the elephant race.

Congratulations Thailand, your greed and stupidity (Thainess) won once again!
