Thai Health Promotion Foundation joins 8 Isan universities in binge control

BANGKOK, 1 February 2015 (NNT) - Thai Health Promotion Foundation has signed an agreement with eight universities in the lower northeast region of Thailand to jointly discourage binge drinking among university students.

They will pursue the aim through the universities's network for A Better Understanding of Alcohol, said the foundation director.

The campaign has been launched in the wake of progressively higher rates of drinking among students. Drinking is believed to be a cause of violence, gambling, and drug use among youths. The campaign therefore aims to adjust the attitude of students toward drinking alcohol. Meanwhile the universities will be informed that they are in charge of alcohol suppression.

The director of the campaign said that there was an urgent need for all sectors to join hands to discourage youth from alcohol and drug abuse by increasing media literacy among the young, so that they have greater discernment towards media promoting alcohol.

The eight universities joining the campaign are Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Ubon Ratchathani University, Vongchavalitkul University, along with Rajabhat Universities in Buriram, Roi Et, Srisaket, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani.

"Thai Health Promotion Foundation has signed an agreement with eight universities in the lower northeast region of Thailand to jointly discourage binge drinking among university students."

When drinking is part of a society, both in the general and university cultures, it takes a lot more to change the particular pattern than a declaration by a foundation. I would say this is more of wishful thinking.

I hope it is more successful than the D.A.R.E. program in the states. Lots of posturing, misinformation, false reports concerning success...Wait...The U.S.A. does have a grip on Thainess...or at least the American police do.

One thing that would help considerably, would be taxing alcohol based on alcohol CONTENT. That includes everything, such as the gut rot white spirit Lao Khao.

Another thing that might help would be a constant barage of public service messages (funded by the government) against excessive alcohol consumption and on drinking and driving on TV 24/7/365. Keep it up until it finally sinks in.

Might also do the same (public service messages) aimed at driving and rules of the road.

Simply urging people to not drink won't have any effect.
