Despite the violent incident in front of many witnesses including the media, the police officer took no forceful action.

UPDATE... well, forceful action is certainly being taken now against the Colonel

Top policeman sacked over clash at shopping complex

Deputy commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Ritthirong Thepchanda was dismissed yesterday for dereliction of duty in rounding up protesters of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra outside a shopping complex in August last year. Police spokesman Ronnarong Yangyuen said that Ritthirong Likitprasertkul and Wichai Aua-siyapan were arrested on the orders of Pol Col Ritthirong and were subsequently injured in the scuffles with supporters of Mr Thaksin at CentralWorld Plaza. Pol Maj-Gen Ronnarong said the removal was backed by the National Counter Corruption Commission's (NCCC) recommended disciplinary action against the police colonel. Besides removal from police service, the police will recommend that he be charged with a criminal offence.

It is excellent news that an organiser of violence has been dealt with. This so rarely happens. It is also good news as only a few months ago the previous head of the police was trying to promote this character.

UPDATE

NCCC rules against 2 officers

A police major-general is likely to be dismissed from his post for discriminately using force against anti-Thaksin Shinawatra demonstrators at CentralWorld Plaza last year. The National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) yesterday unanimously found Metropolitan Police First Division commander Pol Maj-Gen Manit Wongsomboon to have committed a serious disciplinary violation. He was seen in photographs and by witnesses pushing demonstrator Ritthirong Likhitprasertkul into Jaran Jong-on in front of the shopping centre on Aug 21 last year. Jaran then attacked Ritthirong. The commission dismissed the senior officer's account that he was trying to help Jaran. Metropolitan Police Sixth Division commander Pol Maj-Gen Wanich Surapolchai was also found to have committed a disciplinary violation by the commission for failing to secure peace at the scene. But his violation was minor because he was not involved in the use of force. For this violation he is liable to probation or a salary cut. The NCCC spared Pol Col Panlop Pathummuang, the Pathumwan police superintendent, as the officer did not use force and was only trying to maintain order at the place.

This is very good news if true. If you know people who were present at this event you will know it was very nasty and how the police were involved. The pictures seen do not in any way show quite how bad it was. Luckily it was witnessed by a lot of neutral people. It would have been very easy for an event like this to see no further action when it faded from the news especially when those assaulted tended to not be high profile people not to mention politcal expediency of reconcilliation may have made the easy option for the Junta to be dropping charges. Occaiasionally maybe the ordinary person does see justice.

It IS true.... he's history... the Major General has been fired...

Senior police officer fired for failing to act against pro-Thaksin activists

A top policeman was Wednesday discharged from the force for failing to act against pro-Thaksin Shinawatra activists who attacked opponents in scuffles outside Central World last year.

Metropolitan Police Division 1 commander Maj-General Manit Wongsomboon was discharged from the force Wednesday following a National Counter Corruption Commission finding that Manit was negligent in police inaction against attacks on anti-Thaksin demonstrators in August 2006.

Metropolitan Police Division 6 deputy commander and its investigation and detectives subdivision chief, Colonel Ritthirong Thepjanda, was dishonourably discharged after the September coup last year for similar offences.

National police chief General Seripisut Temiyavej sympathised with Manit but had to follow the law and approve the officer's dismissal.

A successor will be named soon, he said.

Pol Maj Gen Manit to appeal resignation order

Police Major General Manit Wongsomboon, commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 1, does not intend to roll with the punches and stand down without a fight. On Tuesday night, National Police chief Seripisuth Temiyavej stripped him of his post for failing to carry out his responsibilities as a police officer during an anti-government protest on August 21.

“I feel for him,” said Pol Gen Seripisuth, “but we have to respect the law.” Pol Maj Gen Manit, who has already been informed of the decision, is intent on filing an appeal within 30 days and will seek assistance from the Central Administrative Court. According to him, he was stripped of his post for something he believed was “a minor disciplinary violation.”

Many have forgotten the violence visited upon old people and children by the organized thugs as the police looked away, so it is good to see some punishment for dereliction of duty actually take place even if the politically minded police chief seems to think it was harsh. What actually happened in the incidents of violence by the organized pro-T thugs was far worse than seen on video or picture and the neutrals there will attest to this if spoken to including kids being knocked to the floor and kicked in a clearly organized assault. It is a shame that in the political deals this kind of thuggish display will be mostly convenietly forgotten apart from the dismaissal of some police general who will no doubt survive well without his salary and can probably appeal this until well past his retirement date. One wonders whether Samak will state he will reinstate the dude after his rise to bought power after all he has cheerled far worse than this before without ever even commenting on it let alone showing any remorse. The well oprganized and enacted violence associated with the last days of the Thaksin regime and scattered across a number of provinces against their differing political opponenets although not on the scale that the ilk of Samak revel in was still completely unacceptable in a democracy although by then Thailand had long ceased to have anything that could be viewed as democratic. These incidents should be remembered and not conveniently forgotten as part of some heinous politcal deal.

All one has to do is look back to post #209 to understand getting fired is the right move.

This is just another thing Samak must consider if he is to keep saying what he is saying.

Commander dismissed from police service

Failed to do his duty at anti-Thaksin protest

National police chief Pol Gen Seripisuth Temiyavej has dismissed the commander of Metropolitan Police Bureau division 1 from the force for failing to carry out his duty during an anti-Thaksin protest in August last year. Seripisuth stripped Pol Maj-Gen Manit Wongsomboon of his post for allowing Thaksin supporters to attack anti-Thaksin demonstrators in front of the CentralWorld Plaza on Aug 21 last year and not taking action against them.

The NCCC ruled that Manit committed a serious disciplinary offence by allowing supporters of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to go free after they attacked and injured anti-Thaksin protesters during the CentralWorld rally. The NCCC told the Police Commission of its ruling. An internal police inquiry subsequently found Manit was liable to be dismissed or expelled from the service. It recommended he be dismissed, which is a lesser penalty in terms of severance benefits paid to him.
