The Hanmac Defency is one ultra-expensive smartphone

Smartphones are typically classed as either low, mid or high-end devices, purely because the vast majority of them can be easily categorised by price or features. However, there are some ultra-expensive luxury devices available costing upwards of thousands of dollars, such as the strangely-named Hanmac Defency, which has just launched in China.

Some smartphone brands, such as Vertu, specialise in very rare and expensive devices – they cost way too much for regular consumers, or at least, most people would scoff at spending silly money on such a device. In the case of Vertu, it’s the use of fairly exotic materials and unbelievable, personalised customer service that sets them apart from regular phones.

Hanmac, a French brand which specializes in luxury smartphones, has released two new phones in China – the Range and the New Defency. The Range is actually a fairly standard ‘feature phone’ (i.e. no real standout features, mainly for calls and messages), but it’s the Defency that is more interesting. It offers a very bizarre post-modern design and all-metal construction, with engravings and strange protrusions all over its case. It’s almost impossible to explain the design – so check out the pictures and you’ll get an idea of what we mean.
