BANGKOK: -- THE Election Commission (EC) yesterday issued red cards to former Si Sa Ket and Ranong senators.

It also plans to take criminal action against former Pheu Thai MP Arisman Pongruangrong for using doctored photographs and spreading rumours about a Democrat Party senate candidate.

EC deputy secretary-general Dussadee Pornsuksawat said the commission had resolved to revoke the election rights and take criminal action against Wilda Inchat, a former senator for Si Sa Ket province, for allegedly getting Arisman to distribute CDs and the doctored photographs to win votes. The CDs and photos were distributed at a cooperative meeting in Si Sa Ket's Huay Tab Tan district.

The EC said the group ran a mud-slinging campaign against political rival Democrat Sompop Mankong by distributing doctored photos showing him standing next to People's Democratic Reform Committee leader Suthep Thaugsuban with the caption: "Sompop donated Bt2 million to oppose the Thaksinomic system."

The pictures were used to misrepresent Sompop, Dussadee said.

Wilda had previously lost her election rights over charges that she lied about holding a doctorate degree.

The EC also issued a red card to former Ranong senator Sakda Sriwiriyapaiboon for allegedly distributing calendars carrying doctored photographs of him standing next to former Ranong senator Wirat Romyen. The EC will take criminal action against the two senators if the Supreme Court rules in favour of the EC.

I think it is a good idea that the EC's roll be concentrated more on vetting and scrutinising election process and candidates rather than organising elections, it is clear they do not have enough staff to do both - leaving the routine mundane tasks to other departments get a thumbs up from me

Amazing "cause" and "effect" in action.

The EC faces loss as an Independent Organization and merger into one or more government ministeries, and all a sudden it issues red cards. It is making a blatant attempt to show how important and VITAL it is to the CDC/NRC as an independent organization. This action, seemingly as an act of self-preservation, only demonstrates just how politcally corrupt this organization has become.

So if a senator lies about his educational qualifications, fakes photos to inflate his reputation, and maybe even forgets to mention his criminal convictions, he gets to serve his 6 years as senator, and then maybe gets voted out, if he hasn't managed to steal enough to bribe his way back in?

Because elections over-ride laws, rules, honesty and morality, right? And this happens in which other democracies?

So, does that mean Thaksin has it claimed for him by others, or can we look forward to Thaksin's legal representative filing a defamation suit against Arisman and Wilda?

BTW great slogan, but Iwonder if any in the electorate in SiSaKet would be able to give an ecominically acceptable explanation of the "Thaksinomic system". Imight be wrong of course, maybe as I write this a commission in Norway is taking the final steps for a well deserved Nobel Prize in Economics to be handed to that eminent Doctor Pol. Wow i've heard about the speeches but didn't realize they were that direct, the translation is pretty much spot on too.
