PATTAYA: -- A 3 year old child is currently undergoing extensive tests to determine the damage caused to her internal organs after she ingested detergent left in a toilet where she was left unattended at her family home in East Pattaya on Tuesday Night.

The father of the child, who was away working, had a premonition that something was not right and decided to call his wife who then went to find her daughter. She was found convulsing on the toilet floor next to an opened bottle of detergent.

The girl was rushed to Hospital and regained consciousness but she was later transferred to Chonburi Hospital where tests to determine the damage caused by the hazardous liquid will take place over the coming days.

This made me curious.

As I personally do little with them I went in the cupboard and tried 5 different cleaning product bottles.

Not a single child proof top amongst them.

Quality Mothering !!

As parents will tell you, you cannot watch children every minute of every day. Do you want them tied / chained to a chair or something?

I doubt the detergent had a safety cap on it. Such things are more of a rarity in Thailand. Plus lack of education in the matters of dangers associated with bleach and other household cleaning materials.

Yes, the detergent and any other similar products should be placed out of the reach of children, but none of us are perfect and mistakes happen.

'... and mistakes happen.'

The same kind that sees kids three and four up, with parents, on a motorbike? Are those the kind of mistakes you're referring to?

If a started a thread on how nice the weather is, it would descend into Thai bashing within 3 posts as well.

Let's take the US for example: all educated, all safety checks in place, no kids on motorbikes, and no avoidable infant deaths. Thats i, if they do not shoot themselves or others....

Some people here in Thailand don't spend the extra money and when they purchase a refill, they put the chemicals into a soda bottle such as Coke or Sprite. They do this without any cautionary label or precautionary measures. I have seen this many times.
