German father drowned, son rescued in strong undercurrent

Krabi - German tourist, Martin Hofstetter, 58, drowned some 200 meters off AoAyasa, KohJum, NueaKhlong district, police said on Tuesday.

Villagers could rescue the victim's 38-year-old son after spotting the two struggling to keep afloat and crying for help. They used kayaks to rush to the scene.

Medical examiner pronounced the victim death by drowning.

Village headman KriangsakSudthong said the beach is known as a high risk area for undercurrent although it is a popular starting point for kayak paddlers.

Kriangsak said the two rode a motorcycle to the beach and jumped into the sea without asking the locals about the tide condition.
