Two confess to killing Turkish tourist in Samui
THE NATION

KOH SAMUI: -- A SECURITY guard and the manager of a bar in Koh Samui confessed on Friday to conspiring to shoot dead a Turkish tourist, police said yesterday.

Kabin Srisa-ard, 27, the guard, and Kanapong Nakwatchara, 56, the manager of the pub on Chaweng Beach, confessed after several hours of police interrogation that on Friday they conspired to shoot Polot Mehmet, 37, with a .38-calibre pistol that was found in Mehmet's hand. Police said they confessed that one of the guns used in the crime belonged to Kabin and the other belonged to Kanapong.

After shooting Mehmet, they put Kabin's gun in the victim's hand.

When they realised a security camera had captured the crime, they repositioned the camera but failed to see that the incident was captured by several other cameras.

Police said the men told them the Turkish tourist often came to the bar, got drunk, intimidated the bar's staff and created a scene.

On Friday, they said, Mehmet got drunk and forced staff to keep the bar open. The staff pleaded with him to leave but he walked to the counter with a clearly visible pistol tucked inside his belt. Kanapong shot him in the abdomen with his own gun and then Kabin shot him in the head with his gun. Kabin and Kanapong then tried to cover up the crime to confuse the police. Police yesterday brought both men to the bar to re-enact the crime before detaining them at the Provincial Court.

At this point, well done by the RTP. But ThaiVisa needs someone to create and manage a new forum: "Whatever Happened To …?" There are so many stories that have disappeared, that readers are interest

  • Who walks into a bar ( forang ) tooled up with a pistol If you ask me this Turk was a menace and probably played with fire and got burnt I am sorry but more to this story than what is written and it

  • Makes all the members that said the police were complicit in a cover up look stupid. Good work by the RTP.

There are so many stories that have disappeared, that readers are interested in.

What, for example, will happen to these two retards, after the story dies away? A year or two in prison, if not less?

With all due respect it would not have taken Sherlock Holmes to work out what actually happened in light of the multiple camera situations and thus the evidence on offer which showed a number of clear and complete visual recording of the incident.

The situation could not be covered up

Good to see the RTP have learned that cctv can be a useful aide in solving murder cases. There was a recent case not a million miles away from Samui, in which the RTP absolutely refused to look at cctv from a notorious beachside bar in close proximity to the murder. Local residents begged them, just get the cctv, you will catch the murderers, it's so easy. Police did the classic doggy refusing to look at his clarts on the kitchen floor - total refusal to review cctv, and fecklessly arrested a couple of innocents.

I wonder, would the RTP have reviewed the cctv in this case had the security guard and bar owner been related to very "influential" families?

Who walks into a bar ( forang ) tooled up with a pistol

If you ask me this Turk was a menace and probably played with fire and got burnt

I am sorry but more to this story than what is written and it ain't murder

If someone specially a foreigner was to come into my place of business and start trouble and i could see he was tooled up then should I let him bully and intimidate me in my own bar ( if I was thai ) in my own country

Some people just read a comment without a clue

People

Don't just shoot people out in the open without some sort of argument

I reckon if he wasn't carrying a gun he would will be here today

Did not the RTP initially and immediately rule this a suicide? Complicity or or extreme stupidity, hardly any room for praise to the RTP.

Exactly, and well said. When I read this story, I found myself wondering why they have not framed up a couple of foreign laborers. I conclude that the bar owner is not influential enough.

I see so many comments looks like anti Thai politics anti Thai way of rule way of life. Why are you lot still here if it's that bad. Don't make any sense????

At least and last RTP did take a stand and arrested the curlprits. Job well done . Ensuring proper justice will for sure make thailand a safer place, that's what I believe.

Re the "reason" given above for killing the man ...having to do with intimidation and "having a clearly visible pistol" (sorry I can't find a way to quote from the OP), did we not read yesterday that the reason the shooters planted a pistol on the victim, was because they were unaware of the fact that he already had one???

Either way he had a gun and walked into a club. Looks like a trouble maker plus the selfish Turk has a gun registered to a thai which means the owner of the gun could be in trouble also

See your point though it don't make sense

The reports report facts as they arrive could be a while until we find the full story or if we even get it

But walking into someone else's business tooled up tells me he was a trouble maker

Good Job from Police.

These 2 scam-bags put to the jail and throw away the key ! (I know this only dream)

as already mentioned this guy was obviously a thug

In my books walking into the bar making demands with a gun in his belt and showing it (probably not the first time) is as good as taking it out and pointing it - although that part of the story is somewhat unclear as to whether they new he was carrying or not

what sort of place would Thailand be if every falang or wannabe falang thug was walking around with a gun hanging out of their waist band - I for one would not be living here

In saying that - the bar manager should have called the police and let them deal with it

I had exactly the same thought after reading the following in the OP

The staff pleaded with him to leave but he walked to the counter with a clearly visible pistol tucked inside his belt.

Something doesn't sound right...

They called the police many times and escorted him away

But he kept coming back

This is not the first time he made problems in the place he had many businesses on the island and was well known in the area

Looks like the this tried to cover it up but I don't think they were wrong I reckon they just had enough

If a Thai was to murder someone they would do 2 on a bike a professional hit

This was an argument whilst playing with drink, guns and probably more

Might be because of the gun laws in entertainment Venus

They might have been worried about the laws that say that you cannot have a firearm in any entertainment Venus more than the law about protecting their bar

How stupid can one be to work at a bar both manager and security that stands around doing nothing and not know where the CTV s are in the surrounding areas? Also why both the manager and security's carry guns? Is this the norm in that area?

'Did not the RTP initially and immediately rule this a suicide?' Rubbish, they did not. Read again this quote from the initial reporting on the 13th Feb:

'Koh Samui, Surat Thani: A Turkish tourist was shot and killed by a security officer of a pub on the tourist-destination island of Samui early Friday, police said.

The 27-year-old security officer, Kabin Sri-sa-ard, claimed the tourist, ç, was about to open fire at him first so he shot back in self defence'.

From what I read the staff were also present at the time, so they also lied , maybe the Turk was cutting either the manager or the security mans grass? Problem solved eliminate the competition.

Good Job from Police.

500 bhat fine .. it was a turk,,

solo bar has been there from day dot.. they are a handy family gang who own that bar.. the shooting wont be much trouble for them .. u get in more trouble driving moped without helmet ...

TIT. They will only get 3 years for manslaughter.

If they'd only said the Turk was threatening them and so they shot him, two months in jail punishment, maybe no jail time. I really don't blame them for shooting an armed drunk that is intimidating them.
