PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: -- A German tourist was yesterday rescued after getting lost and stranded on top of a hill cliff in Khao Ta Monglai nationak park in Muang district of Prachup Khiri Khan province.

The tourist was identified as Michael Heck-Roth

A Thai fisherman Boonsong Saengcharoensri said as he went out fishing Sunday morning, he heard someone shouting for help from a seaside hill cliff.

He later saw the tourist was waving his hands seeking help from the cliff.

He said he then turned his boat to the coast but could not land due to the strong waves.

He went back to the shore and alerted park officials and rescue workers.

Rescue workers and local authorities spent an hour on foot to reach the cliff and rescued the exhausted tourist to safety.

He left his rented bicycle in front of the park office on Saturday evening and walked up the mountain to see scenic views of Ao Noi, Ao Prachuap and Ao Manao bays, Heck-Roth said.

But he got lost on the way down and was stranded overnight on the cliff until he saw a fishing boat passing by and shouted for help.

He appeared exhausted, dehydrated, and had scratches on his body. He was later sent to hospital for a medical check.

Park officials said the tourist was supposed to notify park officials before he walked up the mountain.

But he didn’t, they said and added now the park would install a sign in English to inform foreign tourists of the regulations they must comply with.

Mr Heck-Roth arrived in Prachuap Khiri Khan on Thursday and had stayed alone at a hotel in the Ao Prachuap area.

The incident follows a recent involving a man from Kanchanaburi who was stranded in a mountain ravine for 18 hours.

Khao Ta Monglai forest park located in Khao Ta Monglai national reserve Muang district of Prachuap Khiri Khan. The park consists of two mountain ranges which located 290-320 meters above mean sea level, and slope more than 35 degrees. Most of the area are high cliffs and some of which jutted into the sea.
