BANGKOK: -- Former Pheu Thai MPs have voiced mixed reactions to the idea of a charter-mandated reconciliation committee to try to narrow the political divide and to restore national reconciliation.

The idea of the formation of a reconciliation committee comprising nine politically impartial and respectable individuals was floated by Mr Anek Laothammatat, chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee’s reconciliation panel.

Former Pheu Thai MP for Nonthaburi Mr Udomdej Rattanasathien said today that he welcomed the idea if it was meant for the benefits of the country, to bring about reconciliation and national unity.

However, he said that if the idea was initiated just to show that the CDC had already tried its best without considering its result, then it should better be dropped now.

Meanwhile, former Pheu Thai MP for Nakhon Pathom Mr Paichit Srivorakhan admitted that he felt sorry for Mr Anek saying that the latter is a good man.

He doubted that reconciliation would ever be realized for the mere fact that it was mentioned in the Constitution. “But the success of the idea depends on the spirit of the powers-that-be whether they are serious about reconciliation or not,” he said.
