Thailand's Tourism Industry Affected By Military Coup, Says Report

BANGKOK: -- The political crisis that culminated in a military coup in Thailand last year has affected the country's tourism sector, says the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB).

The report compiled by the board showed that the number of tourists to Thailand declined 6.7 per cent to 24.78 million in 2014.

"However, the situation is expected to see a rebound this year.

"The trend in the last quarter of 2014 revealed a seven per cent increase in tourist arrivals to 7.46 million," the board said, adding that this was aided by a better understanding and confidence among tourists of the situation in Thailand.

Lower traveling cost, competition among low-cost airlines, measures to tackle tourist scamming and increased promotions were also attributable to the higher tourist arrivals.

And the fact it is now high season!

TAT must be putting out proper gander again. You only have to look at all the headlines on TVF to see why the tourism is down, scams, murders, cash dropping, Russians broke and leaving in hordes, jet boat scams, plane crashes, police random searches, the list goes on. Nothing to do with the Military.

And you think any of the facts you mentioned is written about in the Western press?

No it isn't, but the coup is.

Police searches nothing to do with the military ???? Bash people on the Phuket beaches because they sit on a chair, nothing to do with the military ????

Travel insurance not valid in Thailand , nothing to do with the military ? Indeed the list goes on..... wake up mate, it will be late soon , if not too late.....

The Lord Buddha be thanked there was a 'coup', pfffew, can you imagine, when there had been none, how could we have explained the slumping numbers of tourists, maybe we would have needed to address the real reasons for that, and even lose some face doing so, oh, no, not that, never!

P.S.: Is this NESDB (did anyone hear of it previously, is it like the cohorts of Shins' attorneys creating a new lawyers' association?) a client of a certain R. Amsterdam for its PR?

Thainess sells - This is a Thai marketing success of epic proportions. Every one around the world love Thainess and want to really understand it better. The second factor and consistent Thai success story is that Thai sex trade sells. The Thai sex trade is the mainstay of the foreign tourists business - everyone knows that. There was some concern when the Thai police and military started making noise that they might entertain the possibility of cracking down on some of the known sex venues like Nana and Soi Cowboy. This mat have created a brief jolt to tourist travel. But fear not, Thai sex is always the leader. Hats off to the Thai girls - they know how to bring it and they are the backbone of the Thai economy.

The high value of the baht which now makes Thailand more expensive than her neighbours which offer the same product.

Sorry but I disagree, the junta are in charge and are directly responsible for the management of the country.

1. They can stop martial law.

2. They can enforce the law to stop scammers, thieves, rapists and murders.

3. They can let the Baht depreciate to make it cheaper for tourist to visit the country.

4. They can change visa related laws to make longterm stay for upmarket tourists easier, thus attracting more tourists with money.

5. They can stop searching tourists at random.

6. They can return the country to democracy sooner and improve the image of the country as a tourist destination.

You see they are in charge and must not hide behind flimsy reasons for tourist declines and an economy thats sinking fast. Man up.

I know many people who have changed their plans because of the Military Coup, it's Un-Elected PM and his Martial Law.

And many more through other friends. And that's just me.

Many that will not come until the autocrats are removed.

Meanwhile, other countries are courting.

And as in any business, once you lose a customer, it's very hard to get them back.

But that doesn't seem to cross the minds of some Thai. wai2.gifwai.gif

Are you trying to tell us that NONE of these things happen in OZ or other countries?

Ever heard about the "Backpacker Murders" just for starters?

I could go on and on but "Thailand Bashers" are only interested in Bashing their HOST Country. If the place is so bad, perhaps you should find your way to the nearest airport and go home.

As for the TAT....I had the pleasure of working with it for many years in Australia as well as in Thailand, and found everyone I came in contact with to be highly efficient and dedicated. Can the same be said for you and whoever you worked for? Perhaps you'd like to provide details and I can check out your work history and then pass judgement in a public arena, on just how good you were at your job...assuming of course that you had a job.

With regards to "Life After The Coup," I have been here during and following three of them and I've never had a problem, least of all with the latest one. Even "blind Freddy" could see the improvements being made on a daily basis since the coup.

'Recommend you do a google search on "social media" and read up. And the police extortion WAS written up in the "traditional" media (Time, anyway; Al Jazeera also; others I'm sure).

It's not so much the coup (driving tourist numbers down) as the necessity of, and conditions resulting in, the coup... But much easier just to repeat the big lie, right? thumbsup.gif

Tourism worldwide is down.

Thailand is doing well by international standards

The Martial Law isn't effecting anything, but maybe the low cost tour companiess who have minimal insurance group coverage.

Additional coverage is available at the airport for Tourists, if needed.

tourists should check there coverage before they leave home.

As we know most don't bother to even get travel insurance.

99.99 percent of tourists don't know The Kingdom" is under martial law.

Tourism worldwide is not down. Utter tosh

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) tourism accounts for more than 9.5 per cent or US$7 trillion of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), is responsible for one out of every 11 jobs, and is growing faster than other segments of the global economy due to the the rapidly growing middle-class in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

It's also interesting that the 2013 figures were changed by Ministry of Tourism after being cited by TAT for a year. The only place I've read it is here, but the Ministry of Tourism website shows the new figure and all of last year's media reports I found cited the old figure also.
Why isn't anyone else pointing out how rubbery Thailand figures are?
I found this publication always has tons of stats and figures in their stories which I personally find useful. Their report on 2014 GDP is by far the most extensive I've found and they had the sector figures out about two week before anyone else AND accurately pinged the annual GDP growth figure before the official announcement earlier this week.

(Ed: On January 15 2015 Thailand’s Department of Tourism issued retrospectively amended figures for both 2013 and 2014 years. As per the amended figures 2013 foreign tourist arrivals to Thailand are now said to have been 26.547 million (previously 26.736 million) who contributed Bt 1.207 trillion (US$ 38.987 billion*) (previously Bt 1.167 trillion (US$ 36.129 billion*). The same exchange rate used to calculate the original 2014 figure of Bt 1.167 trillion (US$ 36.129*) from 26.736 million visitors in 2013 has been applied where marked *. We have used the original figures for calculation purposes as they are the figures on record)

While the total number of foreign visitor arrivals to Thailand forecast for 2014 was revised downwards numerous times last year from the original estimate of 30 million in late 2013 to 25.5 million in October 2014, the forecast expenditure per tourist increased from Bt 43,641 (US$ 1,409*) to Bt 70,558 (US$ 2,280*) for a total of Bt 1.8 trillion (US$ 58,140 billion*). (See: About the math at bottom of Thailand Tourism Pins Hopes on AEC).

And if anyone is interested this is their updated 2014 GDP story: Thailand 2014 GDP Boosted to 0.7% Due to 2.3% Q4 Spurt http://www.establishmentpost.com/thailand-2014-gdp-boosted-to-0-7-due-to-2-3-q4-spurt/
