US$400 monthly minimum wage for Filipinos in Brunei

BANGKOK: -- Filipino migrant workers in Brunei are now guaranteed a monthly minimum wage of US$400, according to a new advisory issued by the Philippine Overseas Labour Office, The Brunei Times reported.

The advisory states that domestic workers, unskilled workers and semi-skilled workers will be entitled to a minimum salary of US$400 per month.

Unskilled workers, as defined by the Philippine government are farm hands and labourers, while semi-skilled workers are defined as waiters, sales assistants, janitors, drivers, tailors and assistant cooks.

Skilled workers – carpenters, masons, plumbers, technicians, heavy machine operators, chefs, bakers and beauticians – will command a minimum salary of $600 per month.

Professionals are expected to earn no less than $1,000 per month.

The Philippines embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan said the advisory will affect all new contracts effective January 5. Filipino migrant workers whose salaries currently fall below the minimum wage threshold can renegotiate their salaries upon contract renewal.

No job order or contract will be verified by the Philippine Overseas Labour Office unless the salaries meet the minimum wage.

Sounds quite good - on first sight...

Philippines economy suffering, so an urgent need to extort more money from the Overseas Foreign Workers?
