Where to buy fresh wasabi root in Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

As most of you know most of what gets flogged off as wasabi is just colored horseradish powder containing little or no wasabi at all.Very interesting but the despite its appearance the part of wasabi that one grates for consumption is actually the stem of the plant, it grows above ground. The plant has a large fibrous root system which is not eaten. The leaves are also edible. A wonderful plant really. It would be great to get some fresh stuff locally but the climate does not suit cultivation of Wasabi Japonica, in Chiang Mai. Fresh Wasabi is a high value product being grown successfully by commercial cultivators in the Pacific Northwest of the USA

Thank you. In fact in Myanmar some farmers are growing fresh wasabi. I received from Myanmar, some friends also bring me from Japan. I heard about an experience near Chiang Mai but the facilities have been relocalized.

Wasabi grow in cold water and grow yourself at home as a hobby is chalenging as it is difficult.

But I still looking to buy Wasabi in Chiang Mai. I heard it was possible to get a time ago by my Japanese friends here.

Go to the Japanese food section of Tops or Rimping, and buy the tubes of wasabi paste. (Not the powder, but the paste.) If you buy the Japanese brand, you get wasabi, not colored horseradish. Living in Japan for 15 years, that's all we ever used! Tastes just as good as the fresh root without the bother. The only difference is that it's smoother than the grated root.

Thank you @folkguitar. We did but we feel nothing better as a fresh root ! BTW trick to keep it: in a bowl with clean water in the fridge with no lighting.

Wasabi is not a root.

Yes, it's a plant, and we use the stem. Your comment is welcome. Thank you.
