My Thai partner (female) does not have a job anymore at my request, so she does not have any medical cover. What are the options for her to get some form of medical cover for hospital visits. She has moved away from her village and lives with me in Chiang Mai. I do not have any medical cover for myself as the premiums are too high for me. But to avoid expensive hospital charges I would like to insure her if she is not covered by the healthcare system in Thailand. She tells me if she visits her village and she has a medical problem she can be treated there for 30 Bahts but it is a four hour drive away and sometimes there could be emergencies and she would have to be treated in Chiang Mai. As usual you try and get the truth out of a Thai person and they are sometimes reluctant to give you the full story or we can put it down to the language difficulties so I am having a job explaining what I need to my partner. Thanks in advance.

As a Thai National, she can be treated at the Hospital in the local area where she is registered on the House Book.

If she has a serious medical complaint then simply go back to her home.

Otherwise, just get treatment in the local (where you live now) Government Hospital. It's a PINA, but that's life.

The other option is Private Medical Hospitals, but you said that are light on for coin, so suck up the Thai Gov't Hospital System.

There are various Thai based Medical Insurance schemes for the Emergency, why not them for her?

Maybe ask in the Insurance Forum ... those guys are across most things!

Can I jump in here. Is it right that a Thai Government employee gets free health care and schooling for kids and this covers the spouse. I have heard that this is the case. My wife was a nurse in a Government hospital and just wondered if we returned to Thailand and she took up working for a Government hospital whether cover is extended to a farang spouse?

Yes it is.

My wife is a nurse at Maharat Hospital [suan Dok] and I get full medical coverage - I don't even pay for medications.

The doctors there who are also professors in the CMU medical schools are first rate.

The care given to employees and their dependents is probably better than that given to the general public. That's the way it seems to be.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I live in Chiang Mai, but - as far as I know - the same would apply elsewhere in the country.

Yes for civil servants, as explained above.

But- not all government employees are eligible. the government is hiring many people that are not civil servants. They started to do this several years ago. It saves them a lot of money.
