Fire Fire at House of Prominent Politician in Udon Thani

Authorities in Udon Thani are investigating a mysterious fire that broke out late at night on 13 May, at a traditional Thai-style house belonging to a well-known local politician. Initial findings suggest the blaze may have been caused by a candle left unattended, but arson has not yet been ruled out. The incident occurred at approximately 21:00, in Chaiwan District. Emergency services were alerted when flames were spotted engulfing the upper floor of the large wooden house, located on a three-rai plot in Moo 2, Ban Chaiwan. The house, built entirely of timber and supported by 15 large wooden pillars, sustained significant damage before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control. Local residents notified firefighters from the nearby Chaiwan municipal office, who arrived promptly and prevented the fire from consuming the entire property. An estimated 30% of the structure was damaged, with the loss valued at around 300,000 baht. Mr. Bandhoon Narisarangkoon, Chaiwan District Chief, and Pol. Col. Rattapolchai Phensongkram, Superintendent of Chaiwan Police Station, visited the scene alongside forensic investigators to determine the cause of the fire. Authorities noted that the house had been disconnected from the power grid for two to three months, making an electrical short circuit an unlikely cause. The politician who owns the house, currently overseas on a work trip, explained to reporters that he had inherited the home from his late mother. While he no longer resides there, the property was handed over to his two younger brothers for maintenance. He believes the fire may have started from a candle left burning while his nephew, who stays in the house, was out. “I don’t believe it was arson,” he said. “The house is old, all wood, and if a candle was left unattended, it could have easily caused the fire. I will return on 19 May to inspect the property myself.” Pol. Col. Rattapolchai confirmed that while the fire was successfully contained, the exact cause remains under investigation. “We’re not ruling out any possibilities. A man’s decomposed body was found floating face-up in the canal, entangled in the propeller of a moored fishing boat. Police Lieutenant Chakkrakit Saengchan, an investigator from Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station, accompanied by forensic officers from Phra Pok Klao Hospital and volunteers from the Sawang Katanyu Chanthaburi rescue unit, responded to the call at approximately 06:30. The body was found floating near the pier behind the Nong Bua Food Market, with the right arm still hooked around the rudder of the fishing boat. Rescue personnel secured the body with rope and brought it ashore via the pier’s access steps. Preliminary examination revealed that the deceased was a man dressed in a long-sleeved blue shirt and cream-coloured trousers. No identification documents were found on the body. Notably, the man bore a tattoo on his left ankle and another with sacred script across the middle of his back. There were no visible signs of injury or foul play, and forensic experts estimate that he had been dead for approximately three days. A local resident who discovered the body said she was taking a routine early morning walk by the pier when she noticed what appeared to be a large clump of water weeds or floating rubbish entangled in the boat’s rudder. Upon closer inspection, she realised it was a human corpse, prompting her to alert a former municipal councillor, who then contacted police. Investigators noted that the man’s appearance and clothing did not suggest he was a fisherman or a local resident. The cause of death remains under investigation. The body has been transported to Phra Pok Klao Hospital for an autopsy, and efforts are underway to identify the deceased and contact any relatives to aid in the investigation. That’s like walkin’ into a chippy and the bloke behind the counter whispers, “I wouldn’t eat this if I were you.” And this is while there’s a measles outbreak stormin’ through the schools like a pissed-off ghost. Then you’ve got Pete Hegseth, Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary, more like Secretary of Risk to National Security. Lad manages to leak classified intel by roping a journo into a secret group chat like it’s some school reunion on WhatsApp. You couldn’t make it up. National security? More like national liability. Even the pigeons outside the Pentagon are more discreet. Next on the parade float: Pam Bondi, Trump’s AG. Ethics? Never met her.
