Tourists Urged to Respect Park Rules Protecting Elephants

BANGKOK— Officials at Khao Yai National Park are urging tourists to abide by the park’s new hours, which were shortened following several incidents of elephants attacking cars earlier this year.

Tourists are now prohibited from entering the park after 6pm, officials say. The closing time was changed from 9pm in an effort to reduce encounters between tourists and elephants who often come out to feed along the road.

Last month, there were at least 4 cases of young male elephants assaulting cars. Wildlife experts attributed the attacks to bull elephants' increased aggressiveness during mating season, food shortages in the forest, and disturbances to the environment caused by the increasing number of tourists visiting the park.

' Assaulting cars ' ? If Thai law recognises animals can assault inanimate objects would Attempted Murder not be more appropriate but since these elephants are supposedly sexually aroused maybe it should be Attempted Rape ?

the cars are all under 10 years old so it must be trafficking.

Khao Yai park seeks cooperation for entry ban after 6 pm



BANGKOK: -- Khao Yai National Park is now seeking cooperation from tour groups and visitors to strictly abide by its entry rule which now has shortened to ease close encounters with the park's wild animals.

The park now has moved forward its no entry time from 9 pm to 6 pm following several incidents in which wild elephants attacking cars.

Tourists are now prohibited from entering the park after 6 pm.

According to Khaosod, The closing time was changed from in the park’s effort to reduce encounters between tourists and elephants who often come out to feed along the road.

According to park officials, last month alone there were at least 4 cases of young male elephants assaulting cars.

Wildlife experts attributed the attacks to bull elephants increased aggressiveness during mating season, food shortages in the forest, and disturbances to the environment caused by the increasing number of tourists visiting the park.

Khao Yai national park chief Kanchit Srinapwan said officials are trying to spread the word about the park’s new hours after at least five groups of hikers disobeyed the new regulations and got lost in the park at night in February alone.

The time restriction was supported by the head of the Association of Khao Yai Natural & Environment Reserve who voiced that the new hours would lessen impact on the natural environment.

He said what should be done urgently was to encourage all travel agents, tourists, visitors, and hikers to obey the rules and regulation and the new passing time imposed by the national park.

Surely, that should read all motor vehicles prohibited in park between1800hrs to 0600hrs? Except for National Park patrol vehicles.?

From the headline, I thought it would be a story about tourists being caught with pith helmets and elephant guns. Or it could have been about the Chinese taking tusks home to grind up and eat to increase the size of their todger, or is that rhino horn? Never the less, it makes a better story when talking to mates in the pub than having your wiper pulled off by a monkey in an English safari park.

In the topic, "wrong-way-driving-to-avoid-paying-toll" there are many logical suggestions for deterring unwanted traffic.

As this is traffic-related, I am beggared yet again at their utter lack and regard for problem-solving skills.
