I am a teacher in Chiang Mai and my Non Immigrant B visa will be cancelled at the end of March. When it is cancelled I have been told I need to leave the country within 7 days (the school is doing the seven day extention for me). The problem is that my flight back to Canada is mid April so I am needing to stay in Thailand for 30 days.

I know I'll have to leave Thailand but where should I go in order to get 30 more days in Thailand? I saw in a different thread that people from the G7 countries can get a visa exemption for 30 days when crossing over by land - is this accurate?

If you are staying with a visa, as opposed to an extension of stay, it cannot be cancelled and will remain legally valid until the end even if you are not working anymore.

You can leave and come back by air or land, and receive 30 days visa exempt entry. You can go to Tachileck from CM, or fly to Penang or KL, Malaysia.

What do you mean staying wih a visa? I am cancelling my Non Immigrant B visa - I won't have a visa. I am just curious whether it is possible for me to cross at say Mae Sai and get a 30 day visa exemption or what the best course of action is in order to stay in Thailand for 30 days.

The question asked is do you have a visa or an extension of stay?

Have you got a stamp in your passport from an immigration office or port of entry?

A "Visa" (obtained from a Thai Embassy/Consulate) cannot be cancelled "!

On the other hand an "Extension of Stay" can be cancelled by immigration.

By checking the stamps in your passport it should be possible to easily determine what you have.

There are BTW no "free" " 7 days to leave the country" The 7 day extension has to be applied and paid for (1900Bht)

You need to tell if you are on a 90 day entry you got at the border or on a 1 year extension of stay from immigraiton. The first does not need to be cancelled, but an extension of stay does need to be cancelled, together with your work permit.

Crossing the border at Mai Sai should give you 30 days.

Sorry I guess I am confused. My work permit is going to be cancelled so I have been told I need to leave the country. The school is paying for me to get the 7 day extension. I am on a Non Immigrant B visa right now that is valid until April 30, 2015. I was told that when my work permit is cancelled so will my Non Immigrant B visa - is that correct?

I am certain you do not have a valid non-b visa to be canceled. You have an extension of stay that you got at an immigration office.

Perhaps you were told the wrong term if they said your non-b will end.

Just look in your passport where the date of April 30th is stamped and you will see that it says your permit to stay was extended to that date.

CADNOY, ask your school if they are willing to keep your WP alive until you leave the country.

If they are willing to extend your stay with 7 days and possibly pay for it, you could offer them:

- the school can save their efforts and money of the 7 day extension

- you will pay the last month of income-tax to the school if THAT is the problem for the school.

Basically there should be no problem anyway, since the school is closed from the end of March I guess.

Anyway, it will save you a border-run and it will save the school THB 1900 on the extension.

Easiest solution!!
