Three Cambodians arrested, one shot by Thai forces

BANGKOK: -- A Cambodian national was shot and two others arrested in Thailand's Sa Kaeo province on Wednesday while allegedly smuggling drugs across the border, The Phnom Penh Post reported, citing officials.

According to Ho Sakul, director of the Interior Ministry’s Central Border Department, the shooting took place at around 5pm on Wednesday when Thai soldiers spotted the Cambodians, shot one of them in the leg and arrested the two others.

The injured was sent to Sa Kaeo Hospital while the other two were detained, he said.

A post on the National Police website identifies the injured man as 37-year-old Reth Rithy, who it says owned the drugs. His alleged accomplices are Bun Yong, 54, and Bun Sovat, 26, who it says were hired to carry the drugs.

According to the post, Thai soldiers seized 200 pills of unidentified drugs and two motorbikes from the trio.

Pich Vanna, director of the Cambodia-Thai Border Relations Office, said the group would likely remain in Thailand to face legal action.

Give it a few more months and 'border incidents' like this will start another border war with shells flying in both directions. Such a happening will fit nicely in the Thai Military's plans to remain in power for some time to come, as elections would not be possible in a 'war' scenario.

I don't think you're reading this correctly. It seems like an isolated incident... but time will tell.

The present government has done an exemplary job of defusing the Preah Vihear dispute that had almost resulted in war when the Shinawatra clan was in power.

The present government has done an exemplary job of defusing the Preah Vihear dispute that had almost resulted in war when the Shinawatra clan was in power.

You seem to have forgotten (conveniently) early 2011 when the age old dispute flared up again with the Thai Army firing cluster munitions (incidentally banned by most civilised countries - as of August 2014, Thailand has not acceded to, or is actively working towards, accession of the Convention on Cluster Munition, the Thai Army at the time denied they had used cluster munition, instead referring to the cluster bomblets found as "dual purpose improved conventional munition". DPICM that just happened to consist of sub munitions)

Or indeed the incident a month earlier when Abhisit stirred the Nationalistic pot and sent one of his MP's, Panich Vikitsreth along with the old yellow Thai Patriots Network deliberately to cross the border illegally. Of course Abhisit said that the members of the party were not aware they had crossed into Cambodian territory. Unfortunately the not so bright trespassers videoed the crossing and the sound track (not to mention the signs written in Khmer) showed that they knew exactly where they were. This at a time of increasing tension over Preah Vihear and an upcoming Election (nothing like a spot of Nationalism at Election Time)
