Cambodian woman dies of meningococcemia disease in Chachoengsao

Chachoengsao medical officials have admitted that one Cambodian woman died of meningococcemia disease in this eastern province as she was on her way back to her country.

The officials, led by the provincial health official Dr Prasit Koagkaoroptham and Dr Veerasak Anutaraangkoon, director of Buddha Sothorn hospital, told a press conference on Friday about the death of the victim whose name was withheld.

The victim’s death was just announced despite the fact that she died some time ago because they had to wait for lab tests to confirm that the death was caused by meningococcemia disease, said the officials, adding that they had no intention to cover up the incident.

Although it was confirmed meningococcemia disease was the cause of the Cambodian woman’s death, additional tests were still required to determine the type and species of the disease.

Dr Rujirat Boonyalikhit, deputy director of Buddha Sathorn hospital, disclosed the last case of meningococcemia was found 15 years ago and the victim was a five-year old boy.

Provincial health official Dr Prasit Kongkaoroptham, meanwhile, denied a rumour that there are still several cases of meningococcemia disease in Chachoengsao.
