Second under river tunnel boring starts today

BANGKOK: -- The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) will today begin boring tunnel under the Chao Phraya river for its Blue Line expansion project.

The deep tunnel boring project will be the country’s second tunnel under the river.

The tunnel boring ceremony will be chaired by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today.

MRTA board chairman Gen Yodyuth Boonyatikarn said the project is part of the expansion for the Blue Line mass transit project in Bangkok.

According to NNT, He said the prime minister will preside over the launching ceremony of the tunnel boring machine of the second tunnel under the Chao Phraya river as part of the phase 2 expansion of the MRT Blue Line from Sanam Chai to Tha Phra.

On the procurement of the service operator for the Green Line expansion, the MRTA is awaiting the official note from the cabinet meeting that has agreed to continue negotiations with the existing operator of the Blue Line, which is the Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL), and use the public private partnership (PPP) net cost model for hiring workers.

The negotiation will include the extension of the BMCL service from Bang Sue station to Tao Poon station to provide a connection to the Purple Line, while the service of the Blue Line extension is expected to commence in 2017, said the MRTA chairman.

For the Mo Chit-Saphan Mai-Khu Khut Green Line extension, the bidding committee has succeeded in its negotiations to reduce costs in contracts with four construction companies by approximately 56 million baht.

The four contracts comprise of the civil work construction of a 12 kilometre section from Mo Chit to Saphan Mai with the new cost of 15.3 billion baht, reduced from 15.4 billion baht, the civil work construction of a 7.5 kilometre section from Saphan Mai to Khu Khut with the new cost of 6.66 billion baht from 6.74 billion baht, the construction of a depot and the park and ride facilities with the new cost at 4.02 billion baht from 4.08 billion baht, and the design and construction of the rail system at 2.84 billion baht from 2.87 billion baht.

The MRTA board will hold a meeting on 13 March for the approval of the new bidding outcome to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport and the cabinet. The signing of all four contracts is expected to take place within this month.

Engineers dig second tunnel under Chao Phraya

BANGKOK: -- A second tunnel to run under the Chao Phraya gets underway today with a ceremony to mark the beginning of digging.

The digging will clear the way for the MRT subway system’s Blue Line extension from Sanam Chai near Wat Po in the Phra Nakhon district to the Thonburi side and continuing southwest to Tha Phra in the Bangkok Yai district.

The entire blue line underground project is still expected to be completed by 2017. It will connect the existing line from Bang Sue to Hualamphong to the west and south through Chinatown and across the river into Thonburi.

wheres the first tunnel?

Good question.

Searching a bit I found the below from August last year. somehow it seems to describe the same tunnel though. Puzzling. Do I miss something, or does the subway link consist of two tunnels next to each other, one for each direction ?

"The ‘Blue Line’ subway train route which will extend the existing line from Sanam Chai – Tha Phra is making progress with now a tunnel is being bored underneath the Chao Phraya river.

The tunnel will run under the Chao Phraya river for a distance of 200 meters. It is the first time that such a river tunneling has been undertaken in the country."

It is the Ital Thai company.

BTW since the middle of 2014 the working of the Blue Line has been slowed down drammaticaly, you don't see workers as before and often they are sleeping or sitting on the shade of the pillars

Moreover the project has been delayed from December 2016 to early 2019 due to "contract problems" according to the slow- working blue line website (sometimes the page gets stuck when you try to read the "updates").

The page is only in Thai and there is a forum specifically regarding the progress (?) of the Blue Line extention. From what i had understood it was delayed 2 years, I don't know why now they say it will be ready in 2017.

In Charan Sanitwong the works have almost been stopped after May 2014 and they are progressing as a crippling turtle pace.

Two tunnels side by side, if you look at the picture in the original post you can see people standing to the side of the TBM, that gives you an idea of how big the tunnel is. You dig 2 tunnels for a couple of reasons, the second tunnel can be used as an escape tunnel if something goes wrong in the first and do reduce the total amount of earth that has to be removed (since your tunnel doesn't have to go as high). Just to give you an idea http://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/waterviewconnection/ this page has pictures of the TBM required for a 3 lane motorway (so close to and 2 track rail line)

Anybody know who actually is contracted to do the boring? What company, and where are they from?

Confirmed, it's Ital-Thai.

The TBM is a 6.44 mtr Terratec, designed and produced in cooperation with Japan Tunnel Systems Corp., subsidiary of IHI Group-Japan.

Well It isn't Chinese for sure They haven't stolen the designs as of yet.

good joke . . but actually, what is probably the longest tunnel used for transit, is in China. Built nearly 10 years ago. ( and so far, no accidents ! ).

Spare the thought, could the Thais have actually borrowed engineering ideas from China wai2.gif

Hats off to them. They are doing a whole lot more than they are doing in Australia which is doing sweet FA. Both sides of politics are hell bent on building more roads, fuel and pollution.

What, Oz has made many tunnels, just look at Crazy Newmands pet projects in Brizvegas, tunnels loosing money, but threre are tunnes for cars....... just no one uses them due to cost and they pop up where no one wants to go.

Why they don't like a bridge?

The part of the line coming from Bangkok Inner City had to be underground for various reasons. Continuing through a tunnel made more sense.

Why are most posts so negative? Great engineering. That it has been done previously in many parts of the world is irrevelant, it is still great technology. Well done the Thai government and Ital-Thai!

What, Oz has made many tunnels, just look at Crazy Newmands pet projects in Brizvegas, tunnels loosing money, but threre are tunnes for cars....... just no one uses them due to cost and they pop up where no one wants to go.

I think he was referring to mass transit.

but few actually finish

Exactly the case in the first attempt at a Channel Tunnel which the B.I.L worked on. It was allegedly said that huge amounts of cement were disappearing causing the concrete to be of a sub-standard quality. Eventually the first tunnel was scrapped after vast sums of money had been poured into it.
