Ironically, most civil minded Thais were begging for the army to intervene during the protest against the Shinawatra government. The protests were enormous, well organised and peaceful, until Thaksin Shinawatra's Red Shirt thugs started shooting up the place, and throwing grenades. I was there. The police, for reasons one can only imagine, did nothing to reign in the culprits, and always just happened to be looking the other way.

However, the USA administration places no store in any of this. They just suck on the word "democracy" as though it were some great chocolate coated phallus.

The American law, as I understand it will not allow a visa to anyone that has been convicted in a court of law. You do know which government was in power when Thaksin was convicted and jumped bail do you? And you do realize Thaksin has 15 more serious criminal charges waiting in the courts should he return before the statute of limitations expire.

Suthep AFAIK hasn't been convicted of anything yet. Whatever he has or hasn't done is irrelevant to the criminal conviction and outstanding cases against Thaksin.

If you want to portray Thaksin as some honest innocent benevolent democrat then you'd best find a website where his past exploits have been widely discussed. He's probably one of the most evil and dangerous men to come out of Asia.

If you read CAREFULLY, you'll see that the US has not told him he can't come. The US is not in the habit of inviting coup leaders to the US for diplomatic visits. That said, if he wanted to go, he doesn't need an invite. As a head of state he would be admitted.

Spot on. Meeting Americans, one on one they are mostly fine people. And the country itself is a beauty from the Grand Canyon to the Blues Delta to New York, and it gave us rock and roll, jazz and the blues, but America is also the best example of how a rich country shouldn't be the way it is. It's gun laws are shameful and bizarre. It's health care system a joke. It's wages for low income workers shocking. It's treatment of African-Americans still far from ideal and it's belief that it should be the world's policeman will always come back to bite it. A quarter of the population of the China but a military budget second to none, and they still can't repair New Orleans.
