True internet cheating? Router configuration anybody?

Hello

I just ran the speed test from thai visa and even the server seems to be in bangkok, speed was about 20% slower then the speed test from true.

However far more significant issue is, the delivered true dsl router will automatically do a fixed split the bandwith. Meaning if you connect 4 devises, you will get a fixed rate per device of a quarter the line speed. Even if 3 out of the 4 devices are not actively used. Its the zyxel p660hn-t1a. I found out about this when i complained to the true technician about the speed. He said its normal the router would split its share for each device.

Is there any was to get around this?

In my building only dsl is available, which for true is limited to 10mbs/1mbs.

I saw now ais offers better speeds, but i had to sign contract for 1 year at true.

Quitting the contract early would be 2000b. But not sure if i would have the same issues with the ais router.

Best regards

There is no such thing.

On single connection you can get max. 250 kbit/s which suits your quarter bandwidth theroy (which is false).

Use multiple connections for downloading and you'll get full 10mbit. If not, you may need to use a personal proxy to achieve these speeds.

Thanks for the reply!

What you mean there is no such thing? Related to which of my statements? :)

I tested it, for each connected device i loose that percentage of the bandwith regardless its active or not.

Im not aware of how I could connect a device more then one time with wifi.

Just studied the manual this "P-660HN-T1A".

118 pages of quite hard to read stuff (very detailed/highly technical).

There is a "web configurator"? (is it any different from using 192.168.1.1 in the browse as with other routers?)

There is chapter about "Traffic shaping". Honestly I did not really understand what the outcome will be if 4 devices are connected and 3 of them "not active".

What I found is a sentence how to deactivate this traffic shaping.

You should try this to see whether it solves the split bandwidth problem.

Actualy the upload is the biggest issue for me.

1mbs split in half or 4 is not much.

As for the manual i will try to see. I read the delivered manual and went through the webaccess and did not see any settings

I mean 250 - 256 kbyte/sec, but I wrote 250kbit in my reply.

This is a standard throttling of international connections in almost all Thai ISPs.

That means there is no use of buying higher bandwith packages?

If i connect 1 device only, i get the advertised speed. 10mb down and 1mb up.

I never heard such QoS (Quality of Service) that works in this manner.

Perhaps try to close QoS option in your modem/router if there is any?

I've experienced an issue with the ZyXEL p660hn-t1a when setting up additional SSID's beyond the primary. The Primary SSID will run at 100% of the WiFi connect speed while connecting through any additional SSID will only give you a 5mbps restricted speeds. I didn't see anywhere on the WebSetup for modifying this. I have QoS disabled.

I use it to my advantage, giving guests access only to the secondary SSID. They get reduced speed and I still have unrestricted speed on the Primary SSID.

Anyone device connected to the primary SSID have access to thee full bandwidth of my Fiber Optic Internet connection, no mater the number of devices connected to that primary SSID.

Never seen that also, and it seems impossible anyway.

Never seen that also. I worked 20 years in IT.

The true technician said that, otherwise it would not even have come to my mind.

After doing the tests I sadly found out he is right.

And no, that is not what is called LOADBALANCINGwink.png

Load balancing would imply, that it is balancing load smile.png

Now my line is just used to keep free in case eventually somebody might use it.

The admin tool is not very powerfull and I did not find (yet) a downloadable management tool.

there is a QOS tag to check. according to the manual there would be and advanced setting, but even after hours of checking the whole interface up and down and in and out I just cant find a place to make the settings as described in the manual.

Typically I get a much faster connection to Singapore. So if you use a VPN and connect to a Singapore pop...you can "cheat" their international bandwidth capping.

I actualy have a faster connection on the iphone then the dsl. Especially upstream, that seems to be technical for 4g. 15x faster upload.

How would you setup a vpn to singapore?

I pay for a vpn service...the one I use has pops all over the world. I often use the one in SG because of the speed and distance to TH.
