Bangkok:- A 60-year-old Frenchman jumped from a room of a Bangkok apartment he has been living for seven years to his death Saturday afternoon, police said.

Pol Lt Mongkol Praisoon, an interrogator of Thung Mahamek police station, identified the man as Christophe Patrice Allaire.

Mongkol said he received a phone call from the apartment at 2:30 pm after Allaire jumped from his room on the sixth floor of eight-storey Villa Maria Apartment on Soi 8 off Suan Plu Road in Thung Mahamek sub-district of Sathorn district.

He rushed to the scene with officials from Chulalongkorn Hospital’s forensic medicine institute and Por Teck Tueng Foudation’s rescuers.

They found Allaire’s body on the car park ground behind the apartment. He had no shirt on and he was wearing grey shorts.

Apartment’s officials told police that Allaire has been renting the room No 615 on the sixth floor.

The officials checked the room and found that it was locked from the inside. They opened it with a spare key and did not find any sign of foul play.

Dolnopporn Srichan, 34, a maid of the building, told police that she was having lunch on the ground floor when she heard something hitting the ground of the car park violently.

She rushed to check it and found Allaire’s body.

She said Allaire had been living alone. At first, a Thai woman stayed with him but the two separated for years. She said the man rarely talked to anyone when he returned to the apartment. She said he had been living in the apartment for about seven years.

Mongkol said footage from security cameras showed no one entering his room. The footage showed that Allaire walked around the balcony of his room two times and jumped down.

Yes, depression kills.

My neighbor in Kuala Lumpur has been contemplating suicide for years. He even discussed with his wife about the options. He backed out a few times for fear of height. But finally, he hung himself. He was 77 years old then. A pensioned school headmaster and with lots of saving and without personal or relationship problems. He wife is also a pensioned teacher. They had 2 grown up children (accountant and gynecologist). Although he has been receiving consultation and treatment by qualified doctor, he still can escape the end. I believe he is killed by loneliness.

The French man could also be killed by loneliness.

RIP.... Suicide shouldn't be assumed, maybe he slipped or fell by accident.

It appears that wasn't the case - "The footage showed that Allaire walked around the balcony of his room two times and jumped down."

They should make it mandatory to fit bungy cords to any balcony over 4 stories high,

seems to be a quite common way to end it all in Bangkok now. RIP

My friend from Tyneside... usually I like and agree with your comments, but this one I find in bad taste.

The guy walked around his balcony, twice. Did he fly around it before he fell down ? I do not understand how it is possible to walk around a balcony or veranda on 6 floor. The hub of jumpers.

Depression can seriously impair judgment. If a person who has committed suicide would have refrained from it at the last moment, possibly half a year later he would have been quite happy. A depressed person is by definition incapable to make a well thought out rational decision to do this.

People who survived the golden gate bridge jump (2%) all have the same story to tell: they regretted their action when half way down.

We don't know why he did it and there is no mention of a note, no evidence he was 'depressed' or any other motive. The only justification I can ever see is having a painful terminal illness. Both my sister and nephew killed themselves, no note and no evidence of depression or money problems, sometimes life just does not seem worth it.

Sorry but I still cannot come to terms with the statement about the CCTV that was watching him WALKING AROUND THE BALCONY 2 TIMES. I know nothing about condos or any other type of Hi-rise here, but please tell me------ Is it normal to have a camera outside on the balcony? Rest in peace my friend ---I wish I had known you and been able to talk to you before you made this fateful decision.I often think that a friend, someone who really cares about you,can help you get through some of the bad times encountered here. I think I would be sorely tempted myself if I was faced with a terminal illness.Especially if I was in a lot of pain. Then on top of this situation is the horrendous cost of Hospital treatment, and you know it is all in vain and I would rather leave with something in the bank to tide my wife over. This really because I have got a wife who really cares and has already shown that in recent years. This Frenchman did not have that luxury. He evidently lived alone and I would love to know what changes,if any .happened in his life to make him want to end it. Was it health or was it money,or just the dreaded loneliness. We may never know.My condolences to his family and friends.

what is wrong with people on thai visa? did you read the article?

it seems pretty clear to me:

Mongkol said footage from security cameras showed no one entering his room. The footage showed that Allaire walked around the balcony of his room two times and jumped down.

is that in any way ambiguous?
