2015 Earth Hour event to take place in Bangkok

BANGKOK, 25 March 2015 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will be holding the 60 Earth Hour 2015 activity on 28 March 2015, to raise public awareness and participate in solving the climate issue by turning off their unused electrical appliances, said Deputy Governor.

The Deputy Governor of Bangkok Jumpol Sumpaopol has revealed that the BMA, in cooperation with FEED Thailand, WWF Thailand and along with government and private agencies, will be holding the 60 Earth Hour 2015 activity on 28 March 2015 under the ‘Change Climate Change’ concept.

The general public and offices are invited to attend this climate change reducing activity by turning off unused electrical appliances together at the same time as other parts of the world, for one hour from 8:30-9:30pm on 28 March 2015.

The Bangkok Deputy Governor has said that the youth should be instilled on how to use energy efficiently, in keep with the strategy to make Bangkok a low carbon emission city through lifestyle change and energy consumption awareness.

He has said that there are three main activities at the 60 Earth Hour 2015, namely the cycling and tree planting event during 23-27 March, the exhibition on global climate change on 24-27 March at Central World shopping center, and the 1 hour ‘turn off’ activity on 28 March.

Bangkok's key landmarks, namely the Grand Palace, the Temple of Dawn, the Giant Swing, and the Rama IX bridge will be participating in the 60 Earth Hour event by turning their lighting off during the announced time as well. Lighting on important roads such as the Silom Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Khao San Road, Yaowarat Road, and New Petchburi Road will also be adjusted to mark the global event.

The Earth Hour activity in previous year resulted in an electrical usage reduction in Bangkok by 1,768 megawatts, equivalent to the reduction of 947 tons of carbon dioxide. The energy production drop helped save up to 6.76 million baht in electrical costs.

While I admire the idea, can anyone point me to stats that this annual 60 mins of press material amounts to anything in terms of ongoing energy savings?

I wonder how much energy is consumed in going such events worldwide x all the other nice add ons associated with the pre and post build-ups.

Wanna make a difference - ask people to leave their cars a home for one day. Rather than ask, just make it the law for 1 day. Give plenty of notice of course and allow exceptions for emergency vehicles and the like.

Back to the original topic, will malls close early on this day to show their commitment to such a worthy cause?
