31 people tested positive for drugs at two checkpoints set up yesterday (March 26).

PHUKET: -- 31 people tested positive for drugs at security checkpoints last night (March 26). But entertainment venues remain spotless after Phuket governor led an anti-drug and crime team to chech several in and around Phuket Town.

At 8pm, Governor Nisit Jansomwong led a group of territory defence volunteers, stability department officials, Phuket city police and health department officials to carry out an anti drug and crime campaign aimed at keeping peace and order on the island.

More than 100 officials divided into two group and set up two security checkpoints. The first was set up in front of the OrBorJor hospital in Talad Yai, the other at Sriphuwanart Park in Wichit.

The team also carried out raids at entertainment venues in and around Phuket Town to search for illegal activities and drugs.

Gov Nisit said the reason for the swoop was to keep up with the Ministry of Interiors peace and order policy which aims at preserving the good image of tourists destinations such as Phuket and Chiang Mai, especially as it is now close to the Songkran festival, when tourist safety is essential.

Gov Nisit said, “We wanted to check entertainment areas for any illegal activity and to get them ready for Songkran. Recently we have received a lot of complaints about entertainment venues relating to noise disturbances, dirtiness and drugs.

In Wichit, officials gave 212 random teenagers and residents drug tests with 20 people testing positive for either methamphetamine (ya bah) or crystal meth (ya ice).

Those who tested positive were advised to seek drug rehab treatment.

Meanwhile, another group of officers raided The Time Bar, Baza Restaurant, Eve Wine Cafe and Mini Restaurant for illegal activities but found nothing untoward.

At the OrBorTor Hospital checkpoint, 189 people were tested for drugs, 11 people tested positive.

In Phuket Town, 18 entertainment venues were checked by officials but no illegal activity was found.

Thainess would excel in the Olympics with their culture of follow through...

Those tested positive for drugs in Singapore would earn a year's confinement in a drug rehab.

...8%.....think that is the 'norm'....???

....of half the population.....2.4 million drug users.....???

...any other figures on that....???

Since the check was selective (time and place with highest chance of a catch), no, that is not the norm.

Are the two mentioned substances the only drugs this test can detect? In for instance the Netherlands, roadside tests have become quite sophisticated, for instance marijuana, heroine and cocaine are also detected. An exception seems to be the fairly new drug GHB, which till now escapes detection.

I take it you count the mid 90's as being *new*?

.....How about testing positive, and under the influence while driving a motorbike or vehicle? Why don't they

arrest these drug addicts? Don't they realize by letting them go, and if they do get in a reck, the Police would be liable by not taking them off the road? This makes the Police look bad, they are playing with people lives!

>>Those who tested positive were advised to seek drug rehab treatment.

I'm sure they'll just head straight on over to rehab seeing as the punishment is so harsh.

And what would you do?

Do the USA style of justice and throw these people in jail? You seem to forget that unlike the USA, jails here in Thailand are not a businesses looking to make a profit. 2 MILLIONS American in jail right now, more than half on minor drug charges...

Putting drug users in jail helps nothing, solves nothing which is the typical US political strategy... If anything, it makes things worse.

I very much like the approach of offering help to the addicts.

BUT PLAY HARD BALL ON THE HARD DRUGS SALE AND PRODUCTION!!! PLAY VERY HARD THAILAND!!!
