I just had the fibre to the home package installed and its clearly quick..

But they of course forced me to buy the all in one router modem wifi hardware they sell..

The line installer was purely a cable installer.. not a clue how to set it up at all and he just departed and a call or two to the local office, who dont speak english and they reset the box from their end, updated the firmware and it started to operate on my home net.

Now because of my media stuff I need to set some DHCP rules.. I need custom name servers in there and its a lot easier if I dont have to input that data on every phone, tablet, TV box, etc etc in the house.. But the DHCP seems quite flaky on this box.. One it takes forever for my desktop to pick it up, and 2 my settings are lost on ech reboot of the modem.

The wireless SSID settings etc stick, but my DHCP settings dont.

Does the box auto update each reboot ?? Are they really locking out the choice to use custom nameservers ??

Anyone else trying a non default config with 3BB fiber ??

If you need this and know what to do simply get your own router running your favourite opensource os and put 3bb in bridge mode.

Puts it all under your control in a familiar and reliable environment that you can even take to a new provider.

Failing that it should in theory be manageable, I have put varying 3bb routers into many different configs over the years, some are better than others.

Rarely set custom nameservers on dhcp since I prefer static ips so cant comment specifically on that.

Surprised that DHCP Binding (static IP to MAC) isn't sticking.

And serving DHCP is delayed to your Desktop... have you tried using a different LAN port?

If it doesn't clear all these issues with a full reset, I would either get it replaced it or (as suggested) put it into bridge mode and run your own Router/Wifi.

Of course I can add my own additional hardware... Just trying to understand if anyone else has managed to make custom name servers stick. I mean its not like it was free or I am renting it, I bought it, its mine, yet it wont take settings (well it will they just wont stick past a power cycle).

I think the delayed DHCP for my desktop was before they did an external FW update (so she said on the phone) and it seems to have a pretty slow boot time for a router..

But its not dishing out a custom name server to the clients past a power cycle.

The 3BB router was so bad I just bought a new router (TP-LInk AC1750) and linked it by the lan port to the 3BB router. (Then switched off the 3BB wifi). Works fine and has a better range and is more stable.

Yeah I have other routers, switches and things I can use..

Just wanted to know if this one was supposed to work.. Testing it it seems you can make DHCP DNS settings, and they propogate, but it resets each reboot..

If you already know the User/Pass for accessing the web-setup of the HG8045A, then disabling the Built-in WiFi and switching into Bridge Mode is right there.

Would mind providing the config of your VOIP wan connection settings? I have been able to bridge the modem to my Asus DSL-N55 router but no luck with VOIP which keeps blinking.

Who is your VoIP service provider, and how was it originally set up?

If the ISP is your VoIP service provider and they are delivering it over a VLAN, then you'll need to work that out.

Unless you have another device to act as the VoIP ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) to utilize an existing analog telephone then you'll need to connect to the service with a VoIP or SIP client.

I'm with TOT for internet. Yes they are the ones providing VoIP as well. Initially they set up all services (TRC09_VOIP_INTERNET) in 1 WAN connection. I had to delete that config as it didn't let me bridge it with my router. So I created a simple connection with internet service only which I then bridged. I've been unable to set up VoIP since.

I don't have any VoIP ATA device or a VoIP/SIP client. What would you recommend among the two options?

Just want to let you know I don't use TOT's VoIP phone service.

It's my understanding that once you 'bridge' your fiber optic router you lose most of the functionality and options of the router, that would include the VoIP setup and use of the built-in ATA POTS/RJ11 hardware, as all traffic meant for your account is now passed to the LAN/SWITCH Ports.

So you need to replace the ATA portion of the interface.

This may be similar or part of TOT NetCall service. Their website has a download page where you may be able to download software for your PC, a soft-client for your iOS or Android mobile device (this may require 3rd party software from Google Play) to connect to the service. TOT NetCall service also supports hardware-based ATA devices that connect to your LAN via Ethernet cable so you can use normal POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) analog equipment you may have.

You might want to download an play around with the software first, see if it works, but I'd suggest giving TOT a call and see what they recommend for someone who has chosen to 'bridge' their VoIP-capable router to a non-VoIP Ethernet Router.

Thanks for the detailed explanations. I'll go through those options and revert to share the experience.

Same here, ISP gave me a crap Huawei fibre router. I just turned everything and use my own router for managing the network, and the ITUS as a perimeter IPS.

Once a router has been placed in 'Bridge Mode' it usually loses the ability to be accessed via a Layer 3 IP address, so no more access to webconfig, as it becomes invisible and passes all data packets directly through from the WAN to the LAN interface.

...I've only heard about a rare few consumer routers that allow you to maintaining a working IP accessible LAN interface while in Bridge Mode for the purpose of monitoring or modifying the interface configuration. Usually you have to hard-reset the device so it reverts back to Router Mode to regain webconfig access.

You might get a number of problems using your own router in bridge mode..

TOT fiber is provided over a VLAN, so you need a router than can use VLANS

SiNET fiber will only pass traffic in bridge mode if your custom router DHCP ID and Mac Address matches the one of the router they provide.

Sorry I don't have experience of 3BB fiber, but it may not be as simple as some make out.

Before I reset the Huawei it occured to me that it might be my NIC config that was causing the problem. My apologies. It ended up being that the NIC was manually configured to 1000TBase and the router doesn't support that speed.

The trick though to let the bridged router be accessible through a LAN interface is by leaving one (or more) LAN interface(s) unchecked in the binding options on the WAN connection config. Those unchecked interfaces will not be bridged thus leaving you the possibility to acces the router's web interface.
