Buriram police offer free 'drive home' services

BURIRAM, 30 March 2015, (NNT) - In a bid to prevent road accidents from drunk driving, the Buriram Provincial Police, Office of Land Transport, Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and other related units have set up extra parking and free taxi services for holiday-makers.

Officials stated that a large number of domestic and foreign tourists have been pouring into the province recently. Checkpoints have caught several motorists with blood alcohol content past the legal limit of 50 mg percent.

Officials have recommended that these holiday-makers refrain from drunk driving and leave their cars at parking lots overseen by police. There are also taxi and motorcycle taxi services to ferry drunk motorists home. These services are being offered free of charge.

The police said these programs are designed to prevent road accidents and the loss of life and property. The provincial police department also hoped the program would reduce public animosity against officers working nighttime checkpoints.

So the above posters would rather have a drunk guy drive around until the police catch him so they can give him "a hefty fine", rather than keep him completly off the road by giving him a free ride home and a place to park his car.

Good initiative

Posters can take the p!ss all they like but I applaud this sort of thinking - quite un=Thai like. You are not going to stop drinking over Songkran but this sort of gesture is the best that the authorities can do.

I doubt there will be any real practical benefit but good ideas have to start somewhere,

Been doing this for years in the States, usually sponsered by some organization rather than police. But if you can keep 1 drunk guy off the road then it's well worth it. Who knows he might just be that one guy....

  • 1 year later...

My apologies for dredging up an old post. First time I've seen it. Had a good laugh. What a load of rubbish. Free taxis for drunks 555555555

I've  lived in M.Buriram 5 years. This story is news to me !! 555 Same for my wife, and all expats and Thais that I know.

By all means, have some taxis on standby at the police checkpoint. Drunk drivers ? Just park your car over there sir. Leave your keys and ID with us. Taxi will take you onwards from here, at normal full fare.

What .... no money for taxi ? ..... see that brown truck over there with POLICE on the side. Get in.

Then tomorrow, you can come to the local Police Station to pickup your car keys and ID card, after a suitable amount of folding stuff has changed hands, of course.

Oh .... by the way .... your car is still parked on the roadside 25km away. You want a taxi ?

If you cant drive straight after 6 or seven pints, you shouldn't drink.

3 or 4 beers is fine. But the initiative in itself is sensible and seems like a good idea.

Used to do it all the time in Pattaya, probably three times the limit, wouldn't do it now, to risky.
