Less thanStuck - less than 6 month validity on passport so no 90 day exit border stamp run.

Featured Replies

Have 1 year B expires July 15

Have 5 months and 15 days on passport validity, and just had Air Asia refuse me a ticket to Kuala Lumpur for a 90 day border exit.

I was told I could go to Hong Kong, but entry back to Thailand would not be allowed with less than 6 months validity

Circumstances will not allow me to leave overnight in any case - it is crucial I get this done in steps done day by day.

Have already made appoint at USA embassy tomorrow for emergency passport renewal, however- if instead I just go on land crossing - Phuket to Ranong - will the immigration there be so strict as to not allow me to cross into Myanmar , or worse back into Thailand ? Then I can deal with the passport issue next week.

I am exiting Thailand and Asia for good in July, but need to go back through Malaysia, as I have a car registered there that needs to be sold.

Any advice or other info is welcome

Thanks

Dependent on what country you are from you only need a passport valid for your allowed stay to enter Thailand.

Macao and Hong Kong are the only nearby locations that don't require 6 months validity.

I don't think Myanmar would allow you enter with less than 6 months validity. Ranong immigration probably would not let you leave the country.

Thai-Cambodian border is OK, a bit far from Phuket, but you could do a run to get 90day.

^ Doesn't Cambodia have the same rule six months validity required? The counter at Thai air told me 6 months validity to enter Thailand I'm US

To enter Thailand your passport must have the validity matching your length of stay.

So you will need at least 90 days validity on your passport.

As Joe said the biggest problem is entering another country.

Hong Kong or Macao are the only options.

A personal failing !

Why not renew the passport in good time ?

He may need a re-entry permit from immgration then? IF not once he leaves the country his visa is invalid or not?

US passport renewal take 10 days or less and your current passport remains valid until you pick up the new one. You might be able to get a 7 day extension on your current entry at immigration, cost 1900 baht.

He has a multiple entry non-b visa which gives him 90 days entries. He does not need a re-entry permit.

If he had an extension of stay from immigration he would need a re-entry permit.

My friend recently visited Thailand from Cyprus. As his passport was valid for 5 months, he checked online about passport validity, and also went to the Thai Consulate in Nicosia who kindly gave him a letter to show at the airport, confirming that he only needed a passport that was valid for his length of stay in Thailand. He boarded the plane at Larnaka airport, but was then told to leave the plane before take-off. The airline refused to take him because he needed 6 months validity on his passport. They read, and ignored his letter.

He contacted the British Embassy from the airport, and they sent a representative to the airport to extend the validity of his passport by 12 months. He had to re-book the flight for the following day.

So, the airline have the last say in the matter, it's their rules that count.

Perhaps if he had applied for a visa in Cyprus, rather than relying on a VOA at Bangkok airport, the airline might have allowed him to fly.

I went to US embassy at 10 : 30 am and by 1 PM had both my cancelled old passport, and a new 1 year validity passport which I can trade in for regular 10 year passport for no charge at a later date.

I was also given a letter to give to Immigration asking them to transfer visa stamps - it was addressed to the main Chaeng-Wantanna Immigration unit in Bangkok but the officer at embassy informed me the airport immigration could do it, too.

Was a bit of a scare/ set- back when after arriving at Suvunarbhumi, was told by the info desk after inquiring how to see Immigration without a flight ticket, " No can do, must go back to Chaeng-Wantanna, " but I insisted on having an officer come out to speak with me and she said no problem just buy the ticket out of the country and go to the immigration line and it can be dealt within 15 minutes.

She was correct and I didn't even need the letter until I got into Phuket and the officer was a bit perplexed on why I had two passports but the letter cleared it up immediately. So I got a new passport, in and out of the country on an overnight to Kuala Lumpur - everything taken care of and back home in about 30 hours.

A costly, inconvenient mistake that came from never having had to pay attention to it before, so make sure if you need to do a border stamp run you have the 6 months validity- and yes, it was the airline in this case who enforced it.
