Hi,

This post is in regards to my fiancee's truck (we call it our vehicle since I paid for more 90% of it) but it was originally financed in her name because at the time I had just started a new job whereas she had been in the same job for a number of months so it was easier for her to get financing. Then after 13 months of payments into a 60-month hire purchase, I was able to pay off the loan in it's entirety and get back the title (registration). I paid off the truck end of February and it took about 3 weeks to get the title sent back to me.

After reading a post about how a member removed his name from a joint car title, it got me wondering if it's actually possible to add a second name to a car title?

If so, what would be needed, just the usual address verification from immigration or embassy, passport, visa, entry stamp and copies thereof?

But if I did that, wouldn't it also mean having to contact the insurance company (I have 1st class insurance) to add my name to the policy, same for the road tax, and of course since I now have a car passport for travel to Laos, I'd have to get that amended too, plus the third party 1-year Lao insurance (which could only be done in Laos)?

Sounds like a bit of a hassle and probably a little expensive.

But with both names on the title, would I still need a power of attorney to take the car out of the country? I had one when I took the truck to Laos just under 2 weeks ago.

I think if I had to make all these changes, then I'd rather wait until closer to road tax renewal time to do so, because at that time the car passport expires too (although the same booklet can be extended) plus the 1st class insurance is up for renewal at the same time. This is because I only just got the car passport a couple of weeks ago, road tax and insurance were all renewed in the last couple of months and are only up for renewal early in 2016.

Anyone have any experiences?

And just if anyone's wondering, why don't I just carry the title over in my name only? Well, I could, but since I may be out of the country for extended periods, a joint title seems easier in that it would allow my fiancee to get things done without my permission when I'm not around.

Yes it is possible. You will need documentation for residency from your embassy but you can do it No problem

Or your local Immigration Office.

Thanks for your replies. How much does the LTD charge for this service?

Would I need to go about contacting the insurance company to change the policy to reflect my name as well?

Can anyone answer the question regarding power of attorney, would it still be required or not?
