Ministries plan measures to deal with aging society
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Six ministries are launching measures to cope with the greying of society, expected to make up 30 per cent of the population within two decades. They will start with 155 subdistricts in 76 provinces this year.

They are the Social Development and Human Security, Public Health, Interior, Education and Labour ministries.

Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong told a press conference at Government House yesterday that Thailand would become an ageing society in 10 years.

The Science and Technology Ministry showcased an application that lets the elderly press a button to call for help via smartphones and studies for food suitable for the elderly with chronic illnesses.

The Education Ministry will provide short- and long-term care programmes, informal education classes that seniors could help teach and literacy lessons for the elderly.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Adul Saengsingkaew said Thailand had 8.9 million elderly people, which would rise to 16 million by 2027 - one-fourth of the population.

The ministry plans to strengthen 27,000 communities to be more self-reliant, set up schools for senior people plus 878 community health centres, and train 80,000 volunteers to take care of them.

The Public Health Ministry will provide dental services starting with 250,000 dentures, health and social-welfare services for dependent elderly starting with 500 volunteers.

It will also set up 30,000 "family care" teams this year in addition to the existing 15,000 teams and promoting working-age people's preparedness to become healthy seniors.

Well now this really sounds like effective longer term planning. Good thing. Hope the funding will be arranged for this ambitious plan.

Any chance of giving them any better pensions than the 500Baht a month?

Or this is unthinkable in Thailand?

that would help, true, but at least this is a start towards getting ready for this situation.

These initiatives all sound very good........but I'm quite sceptical that after a while, this scheme will fade away......

I hope not.......but really...250,000 dentures!

A few decades into the future. How about forcing those in their 20s and 30s to start saving for old age rather than expecting the next young generation to pay taxes to support them?

I think the western model is to deny pension until 75 expect them to work till they drop, that is if anyone is going to employ the oldies.

It is because the Western governments do not have the money to pay back what they have borrowed to use over the past few decades.

But then, aren't this what democracy is about? Getting scr*wed by governments for the people.

Thailand' conversion from feudal to 'modern' society is gonna be painful. Traditionally the young people take care of the eldern within their villages. The men work, the women take care of the kids and grandparents. In the modern Thailand the youth is economically mobile and lives a debt ridden life and is moving to the cities.

Most youngsters have no ambition for an agricultural life and job, so who will take care of the aging population?

Start breeding and releasing tigers back into the wild. Urge seniors to take long walks in the forest.

In order to pay out pensions, first you have to teach people to pay taxes, unless of course you do like Greece (sorry couldn't help myself :-)

Don't be stupid. How do you expect everyone to have iPhones and other shiny, useless objects if they are trying to save money for the future?
