BANGKOK: -- The PhraKhanong Court on Friday sentence a woman junk collector to 15 days in jail without suspension for laying a fake bomb at a power post at the mouth of Soi Pattanakarn 65 in Bangkok on April 1.

The woman, Sarapi Channongsuang, 54, a junk collector, was detained by military officers on April 2 for questioning after she was found in the footage of a closed-circuit television camera to be the person who laid the fake home-made bomb at that spot.

Mrs Sarapi confessed to laying the fake bomb, but said she had not intention of causing panic. She said she found a fake bomb inside a liquor box she picked from a garbage can. At the time, a garbage truck arrived. She left the box at the mouth of Soi Pattanakarn 65 and walked away.

She was brought to the prosecution on the same day and charged with violating Section 392 of the Criminal Code.

She was indicted in the Phra Khanong Court on Friday.

The court found her guilty as charged and sentenced her to 15 days in jail without suspension.

After the court’s verdict, she was taken to the central women’s prison at Bang Khen.

A true junk collector would have at least ripped of the clock mechanism because she could sell it.

She's lying...and stupid.

Bangkok – The Phrakhanong Court yesterday sentenced a female garbage collector to serve 15 days in jail for public scare at Phatthanakarn 65 Road on Wednesday, coinciding with April’s Fool Day.

The court found Saraphee Channongsuang, 54, responsible for the public panic caused after she left a bunch of fake dynamite sticks assembled to look like a time bomb hanging in plain sight at a power pole.

Residents ran for safety triggering commotion and traffic snarls while police and bomb squat tried to defuse the bomb before discovering it was a fake.

Prawet police tracked down and arrested Saraphee after reviewing the security camera footage.

In her statement to police, Saraphee said she meant no harm. She hung the fake bomb while sorting out the garbage can and forgot about it, she said.

She said she thought she would separate sellable items in the garbage before trying to assess whether she could sell the fake bomb too.

Prawet police chief Colonel Metha Chiamchaisri said he sympathised with the plight of Saraphee although he was obliged to uphold and enforce the law.

Metha paid the fine of 1,000 baht on Saraphee’s behalf.

The offence for causing public scare is penalised by the jail term of up to one month and a fine of no more than 1,000 baht.

In the judicial decision, the court said Saraphee had violated Section 392 of the Penal Code.

The sentencing had factored in the confession and the first-time offence to half the one-month imprisonment.

But there was no ground for further leniency to suspend the jail term because of the commotion and public scare caused.

20 years for mushroom picking and 15 days for planting a fake bomb. Seems about right.

Don't forget 500 baht for murder

who ever made this fake bomb has been watching too many movies...

but where is the big red countdown display that always lets the movie goer know how much time our hero has to disarm the bomb?

She will be collecting trash in jail for a couple of weeks. Ha, ha.

Glad to see you find her plight to be of humour.

I was on the fence as to whether story her story was believable or not.

I could see it being true, another story on TV said the "device" came from a shop and was a novelty/practical joke toy costing 800 baht.

A trash collector might recognise something like that as having value, but then again would they then forget about it?

However having read a few posts celebrating what happened to this lady I'm going to believe her side of the story.

I could be wrong, but that's better than being on the side of the views being expressed by some (not all, just the more gloating) on this current thread.

Every time I find a bomb in a dumpster I listen to see if it's ticking. If it is, I know it works so I take it home.

... AND tap it a few times with a hammer, just to make sure it's not a fake.

So she found it and thought naaaa i dont want what is at first glance obviously supposed to be a bomb so left it on the sidewalk and just carried on with her junk collecting ???

No thought it might be worth reporting or concerned it might actually go off ? naaaa course not facepalm.gif

Yup sounds about right for Thailand

shes lying, if you just found what looks like a bomb youd get the f out asap and normal people would warn others.

If someone did that in a country with responsible laws shed be in jail for a lot more than 15 days

Im calling it a bad taste Thai april fool joke

Ican see how you might have been fooled by the kitchen roll cardboard with nothing inside and would flap, seems like you're a bigger woman than the bird who found it

25 years for questioning the role of an unmentionable individual via the internet!

It looks like a bunch of toilet rolls taped together.

I always feel upset when I hear of older people taken from their families and put in prison over perceived threats to national security.

However, in saying that, I am pleased the judge was wise enough to give 15 days and not fifteen years.

Unless that was a misprint ??

Well you've certainly demonstrated your intellectual superiority over someone who's probably spent most of her 54 years sorting through rubbish to make a living.

Im calling it a bad taste Thai april fool joke

I'm sure labelling it an April Fool's joke was quite an intelligent thing to do because dumpster divers in Thailand have such a sense of humor and always pull pranks on a special day most Thais would be clueless about.

Maybe next you could step it up a bit and challenge a homeless street kid to a debate on environmental change. That should do no end of good for your ego.

Or better yet read through the highly intelligent farang responses to an obvious April Fool's joke posted on Thai Visa ... year after year after year.

Yup sounds about right for someone desperately in need of inflating a shaky ego by Thai bashing.
