I must return to Australia in the next 5 months, maybe sooner as my step-father might pass. Without knowing the exacy return date and depending on circumstances, how long before the 5 months am I allowed to apply?

You can apply any time. The re-entry permit will remain valid for your current permission to stay. Many get a re-entry permit at the same time that they do their 1 year extensions to cover emergencies.

A re entry permit can be applied for at any time .It will be valid up until your permitted to stay date .

Precise dates are not required.

Does anyone know if possible to get a re-entry permit from a different province than where you live? ie I live in Samui, my extension of stay is issued there, I am currently in Phuket but need to leave Thailand very soon. Will I be able to get the re-entry here in Phuket or do I have to get it from Samui. Not much time left due to Songkran closures!

If you are on an extension of stay you can only apply for a re-entry permit at the office where got your extension.

You can also get one at some airports and border crossings on departure from the country. They are available at both airports in Bangkok 24 hours a day.

Thanks Ubonjoe, that is what I was afraid of! Don't suppose you know if they are available at Phuket airport?

Not sure about Phuket. The only report I can recall is that they are only available at the airport when the immigration offices are closed.
