Lower Global Rubber Demand Leaves Thailand With a Massive Surplus

I recently priced Latex Mattresses ... first class pure spongy latex ... extremely expensive. It would seem that latex should be sold more cheaply to the manufacturers of the purified latex used. The ones I priced were 22,000 to 25,000 Baht ... Even a 4" latex topper is 3500 Baht. Something is very wrong here. If the system allows the selling of pure latex mattresses at a low cost - then sales would go up ... then the more latex used.

Thailand should set up more domestic tire manufacturing plants ...

Thailand should develop other products made from various ways latex can be reformed to make things such as hardened latex rubber roof panels and pavers.

But none of this happens as far as I know...

At what point do people realize they have surfed this wave all the way to the beach and get off?

It's not like the price went down overnight. They watched, and waited, and went to the temple and prayed...

Can you please show the 30 year chart?

Watched and waited... yes, but what to do except send the workers do something else?

The trees need around 6-7 years to reach maturity and become harvestable.

What alternatives are there for rubber tree fields?

how about all the crops that originally grew on these lands before every tom, dick and somchai thought he could make a fortune from rubber?

In many if not most cases the jungle or forest was cleared - no crops replaced. Here in the south -with palm oil trees pineapples are grown in between rows of the young trees and perhaps with rubber trees as well. But of course this stops when the trees get a certain height and block the sun. The part of the article about encouraging the cutting of old rubber trees (and hopefully not planting new) should help in the long run - but not quick enough
