Any issues with asking a friend to bring a new laptop from oz to LOS?

I was thinking of asking a friend, who is coming from the nanny state to LOS soon, to carry a new apple mac laptop.

Are there any implications? Presuming its ok to carry a new laptop in hand luggage. Its rare to be checked by customs in oz when departing or by thai immigration at swampie airport. It she is caught with new laptop what would be the duty charges?

Any opinions are appreciated

thanks

Provided it isnt in its original packing etc then it will be assumed to be "used" and personal etc and no problem. If its boxed etc "off the shelf" there could be a problem and there would be duty to pay.

And provided that he has only 1 laptop with him....not his laptop and the new one for the friend.

A few years back, when things were looser, I brought in 2 new laptops from the US, along with the one I'd taken over there. All three were in my carry on and all peripherals (cases, manuals, CD's, power cords, etc) were in my checked luggage. Original packing had been thrown away in the US. No problem going through BKK customs.

Certainly if it's only one, there should be no problem if it's out of its original packing.

I am thinking of getting myself a mac and wondering why not buy it in Thailand. I am going home next week for a holiday and was thinking of getting one when I get back

agree with above, never had my laptop checked when entering Thailand @ Swampy, even when I brought 2 of them (personal and business)

what might make sense though is that you already set up your new laptop after you bought it... so IF customs would check, you would have it personalized (login and password), loaded with your apps / AV / browsers / maqil system and maybe even have some bookmarks in your browser... then you could even "prove" that it is personal AND "used".
