City meets residents to discuss traffic management

PATTAYA:--Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh met with Pattaya residents to gather feedback about the city’s traffic-management plans.

Pattaya was granted a 43 million baht budget by the government last year to hire Asia Traffic Technology and Service Ltd. to take over the traffic system in Pattaya and organize traffic during rush hours, long holidays and annual events. After a year of operation, plans are to be made in order to reduce traffic congestion in Pattaya.

Kithipoj Permpoon of the organizing committee said that the project is to become a solution to traffic congestion in Pattaya during rush hours and over the long term. Roads in Pattaya must be carefully studied and shortcut routes are necessary.

The April 1 meeting at the Zign Hotel was held to provide an opportunity for road users to share their opinions and participate in the plans to help solve traffic problems.

Roads under study are Sukhumvit, Naklua, North, Central, South, Thepprasit, Beach, Second, Third, Jomtien Beach, Jomtien Second, Thappraya, and the railway-parallel roads.

Most of those attending complained there were no standards for public transport, which makes traffic bad.

Ronakit admitted the city has spent massively on plans and campaigns to solve traffic issues, but none have worked.

Community members attending the meeting represented less than 30 percent of the city’s residents, leaving critics calling the session a failure. There was no public notice of the meeting and the press was not invited.

"...Roads under study are Sukhumvit..."

Seriously...Sukhumwit? Stop construction on the boon-dongle tunnel and put Pattaya Klang intersection back.

In lieu of that have police out in force writing as many tickets as possible for people who double-park. Continue this until people finally understand it is no longer acceptable to double-park. That's a start and it doesn't take a lot of brains or hiring expensive companies to figure that out. My advice is free.

I have had conversations in the past with traffic control experts and it appears that the way to smooth traffic flow is short sharp boosts, controlled by lights. This is totally opposite to what goes on in Pattaya with red lights in view for several minutes, and quite often a lot more, while traffic backs up. This leads to driver frustration and as a consequence the jumping of red lights.. I have waited at a red light at the junction of third road and Pattaya Klang for 15 minutes. Having said this, the propensity in Thailand generally for at least five vehicles to jump the red light would mean more accidents as the lights would change more often.

One way of reducing traffic congestion in Pattaya would be to cut the number of baht buses by up to 50% as there are far too many of them and the less said about the ability and awareness of the drivers, the better.

Poor, badly maintained road surfaces contribute to traffic congestion.

I would love to know which short cuts are referred to in the article. It seems to me that every road in and around Pattaya is a short cut. Things have become a lot worse recently because drivers are trying to avoid the congestion caused by the underpass being constructed at the Pattaya Klang/Sukhumvit junction. On many occasions recently I have been confronted by large vehicles, mostly tour buses, on streets where they have no right to be.

As suggested by one poster, ban double parking but not only that levy heavy fines on all illegal parking.

How about, out of town parking and free buses into the town? Make Beach Road pedestrian only and second and third roads along with Pattaya Nua, Pattaya Klang, Pattaye Tai and a few other east west routes one way only.

Stop busses from entering anywhere from Sukhumvit down and that alone will reduce traffic jams.

Put cops out in the roads issuing huge fines for double parking , that will reduce problems further.

On main intersections issue ridiculously high fines for those blocking lanes which suppose to go straight, but they use it to cut traffic to turn tight off Sukhumvit road.

That alone without any studies will reduce traffic jams., theaparsit road is always full of idiots double parking because either they can not reverse park or too lazy to walk 5 meters
