My iPhone 5 has slowly been deteriorating. Both the power button and home button are on their last legs as I have to push very hard and it's progressively getting harder to push everyday. Also, the battery seems to have expanded a bit as there is a bulge in the middle of the phone and the glass is starting to separate.

What should I expect to pay to have the buttons and battery replaced?

It likely isn't worth the cost. You will sink a bunch of money into it, with no guarantee of how long it will last. Better off buying something new.

The "expanding" battery would make me nervous!

No idea what a repair at some arbitrary workshop would cost here.

In Europe its useless even more at authorized Apple sites.

Just exchanging the glass comes to about 60% of a new device.

What do you reckon this phone is worth if I was to sell it? 2000-3000?its a 16g.

I really like the Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge but at 27000baht, no chance.

If I'm to change phones, I would want to upgrade. What would be something better? I'm not sold on the iPhone 6..

You can see lots of similar stories if you google it. Looks like this. And yes, I'm not keen on it living next to my nuts.

www.gsmarena.com is where you can view virtually every phone out there.

Asking someone "what is better" is like asking someone if their dad is better than your dad. You will never get an unbiased answer from anyone. You need to decide what your needs are, and what OS you prefer and go from there.

If I was buying an android OS phone, I would be tempted to try out the Xiaomi phones.

If I was going to buy something "brand name" (leaders in the field) I would look at somewhere like this store http://stores.ebay.com/mobilepros1/Phones-/_i.html?_fsub=4378353014 and see what price I could get, and have someone bring it over to me. (If I didnt have access to buying the device myself)

You should read my recent thread here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/803312-iphone-5-swollen-battery/. Apple gave me a brand new Iphone 5. The phone was not under Applecare cover and was over 2 years old and well out of warranty. If the battery is under 3 years old and in a dangerous state (expanded/swollen) it could well qualify for a new replacement. Also, did you know about the sleep button replacement program? https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-sleepwakebutton/ Could I suggest you ring the Apple support number , as I did. When you get to the option for English, you will be transferred to helpful staff who should push you up the chain to more senior customer service support in Singapore. Customers all over the world are receiving new replacement phones (Google it). Good luck.

Like rbkk. My wife had the screen pop up. Went to the apple authorised service centre.. They agreed it was a problem BUT suggested taking it to the original reseller (DTAC). DTAC changed it immediately for a new (refurbished) phone. Wife happy. Me happy as she doesn't have to upgrade to the 6

I purchased this one second hand about a year ago so I don't know where it was originally purchased from. I will go to the one in paragon and see what they say.

Just did repairs on ip4.

Home button - 400

Charge clip replacement - 600

New battery (non-origional; will do next time - 450).

So its now (more) usable as second device/ipod.

You can look on apples website if you can get a free replacement battery.I checked my serial no about two weeks a go and I was when I went in shop they said battery was still at 94% and ok but they still put in new battery.

I searched my serial no but I don't qualify for the battery. My power button does qualify for free fixing apparently though.

I might just fix it and wait for the 6s, or iPhone 7 which apparently is going to have "slr quality" photos and will be released this year.

I don't know in Thailand but in France a broken iPhone can be sold on the net in minutes. Lot of DIYers willing to buy, fix and sell again.

Could be a way to pass the buck

You might not know where it was originally purchased from, but Apple do. If the phone is less than three 3yrs old and has a defective battery (As many do) they are being either replaced with refurbished, or new iphone 5 models- if you ask.. (There is no official program/ being kept quiet?)This is because the batteries are dangerous. I would advise you not to take your handset on a flight! The image you posted looks like a swollen lithium battery. Its a simple check for Apple to do. They also check the water sensors for any damage. If both of your red discs are water/damp free, it would seem to be at least worth an ask about replacing the two defective parts (Sleep/power button and the defective/dangerous battery-minimum) Just because the phone is 2nd hand, or out of warranty, doesn't negate the fact that the Apple handset could be potentially very dangerous. As I said before......ring Singapore... it's free!

I went to Apple service at paragon yesterday. They searched my phone and said it is from dtac.

So I went upstairs to dtac and the guy took a quick look at it and said it will take 14 days. He was speaking to my gf in thai, and my gf's English isn't perfect so I was able to figure out what the 14 days is about and what happens after.

I told him that I will find another phone and come back to drop it off once I have a loaner phone until this one gets sorted out.

What do you guys think the 2 weeks is about? Examining for water damage, etc?

  • 4 weeks later...

I went back to DTAC and they took my phone. They said they will call me in about 3 weeks to pick up a new iphone 5. Yay..

Result. The 3 week wait is probably because your new phone is being sourced from Apple Singapore. Expanding batteries are covered for 3 years....if you speak up!
