thaiguy878
Well, due to a confusing schedule the Laos Consulate to apply for tourist visa back to thailand, I had to extend my stay in Vientiane 4 more nights until Tuesday next week. I am with my girlfriend and we have had enough of the Songkran festival and it will be over today anyways. Anyone have any good suggesstions on what we can do here to pass the time until we can return to my home in Thailand? We are really struggling for ideas so anything will help! -Chris

Puyai
I've been there too many times to count and like you I struggle to find something to do if I'm not playing golf. So I usually hang out at the golf course while my girlfriend is visiting friends and family. The things to see, so I've been told are the old Buddhist statues, temples and the large ASEAN market near the shopping mall. There is a bowling alley near the sports stadium. Casino a bit out of town in Dansavhn. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help, but there really isn't that much to do there.
thaiguy878
No that was a ton of help, thank you! Yes we are enjoying the food, it all seems so expensive because its in hundreds of thousands of kip, but the prices are just fine when you do the math I will check out the casino and the bowling alley, and the asean market, thanks so much for the suggestions. Anything else?
thaiguy878
Well, we just tried going to ASEAN mall, tuk tuk charged us 150k kip (totally ripped us off, normal price is 60k we found out) then on the way there got hit by a bucket of black stained water, totally ruining my girlfriends clothes and mine, tried to wash it, clothes are now garbage. On top of that the ASEAN mall was closed, like the tuk tuk driver didn't know that. I tried telling my girlfriend to only give him 100k at the most and that he was ripping us off but nope, he just smiled and took the money from her. This is turning into the nightmare visa run from hell. -Chris Edited April 16, 2015 by thaiguy878
Gonki
There's an indoor shooting range and Bhudda park. Vang Vieng's not far away. I'm in Vientiane and need to get a 3 month Thai visa. What is their holiday schedule like? Couldn't find definitive information. Will walk over there tomorrow.
smotherb
Ah, too bad Lulu's and the White Rose are a thing of the past; Vientiane used to be quite tolerable.
ToddinChonburi
Someone forgot to tell you to use Baht. but they give you kip for change. Tuk tuks will drop there price if you look willing to walk. Nice walk along the river and a clothes market opens there in evenings. all along river is good places to eat and one block to the north. We stayed right buy the consulate and walked mostly everywhere. There is a nice morning market by the bus station.
thaiguy878
Gonki, looks like consulate is open friday, and then monday. So i am submitting my documents for the 90 day tourist visa friday morning and i guess picking them up monday, unless something goes wrong and i get screwed again... It has been closed all week so get there early, it will probally be busy... But at the same time, may not be, because who the hell wants to do a thai visa during songkran! I only had to because i had no choice... Living nightmare so far... Cant wait to get out of here, tuesday cant come fast enough...
Popular Post Gonki
Vientiane is one of my fav. places to work on pc. Very quiet and the ambiance is good for concentrating + tons of ancient monuments for inspiration. Though it's been crazy noisy these few days. I've come to Vientiane a dozen of times and plan on more. Can't believe ppl can't stand this place

thaiguy878
You guys rock! What is the deal with tuk tuks charging more then they do in thailand? I thought Loas was supposed to be cheaper then thailand! Is it me or are people here super greedy and crazy with taxi prices? I asked the hotel receptionist how much i should pay to get just a few minutes away, she said 20k at the most, i go out and they all say 50k! I get it, im white so charge me more, but more then double or tripple seems a bit crazy! Do i really need to say no and walk away 3 times to get the price to be normal? Thats piss poor if you ask me, guess thats what living in a shit country does to people. Sad really. And they wonder why no one wants to live here and grow the economy! Constantly trying to rip off people by that much only makes people hate them and not want to come back. Thailand taxi drivers like everywhere like to overcharge white people but Loas is rediculas. Ohh well, thats why they will be a poor, shit country for a long, long time. End rant. Edited April 17, 2015 by thaiguy878

ALFREDO
For a bit nightlife looking, BOR PEN NYANG RESTAURANT AND BAR on the riverside upstairs, nice view to. Good draft beer and a big bar with always some punters and some ladies. One of the few places where you can see some of the Vientiane Ladies of the night. On the end of the riverside, are also a bunch of nicely lit dinner restaurants, board walk restaurants, worth a night there. Only open late afternoon. Also on the riverside, nice Belgium Restaurant. http://www.chokdeecafe.com/ Edited April 17, 2015 by ALFREDO
