OK I am taking your advice and not going going for the combined scanner and printer.

,

Now I need advice about scanners.

I have seen the following units

Umax Astra 4100 1850 baht

HP Scanjet 2400 2880 baht

Cannoscan 3000EX 2990 baht

Looking at the specs there are all about the same.

The Umax is only USB 1, but does that really matter?

I will not be scanning big documents,

or very complex photos either.

Most of my photograpghy is digital these days.

Comments and views most welcome.

Thanks in advance

All the scanners I purchased for our facility are HP ScanJets and do a very good job. The USB.2 can be and usually is significantly faster then USB.2 depending on device type and firmware. The scanner I have at home is a Genius ColorPage partly due to being inexpensive compared to others (at that time) and probably even more so in that it has a slide/film attachment to allow me to convert my old slides/negatives to digital.

Forgot to add. The Genius I've had for 3-4 years and never a problem and also the HPs at the office are from 2-4 years old and had one fail but heavily used (public scanner). To be honest the Genius HR7X-Slim I have does a very good job with one touch buttons for quick scan, direct to printer and even starting up the fax software.

I bought 5 years ago the cheapest brandname scanner I got and epson.

And it was that time in its reslolution a lot better than my eyes (used to put some electronic pcb boards on it and scanned it if I could not see it anymore.

A lot faster/comfortable than a microscope.

So I think every brand name scanner today, ca do easy jobs without any problems.

But just what I think, its not a test result...

Epson has the fastest scanners with superior quality! I still use an old Epson perfection 1200 SCSI Scanner beside of an comdi 5100 CX. I will never change to a different brand. All others I've in the past was getting problems shortly after finish of Warranty time! Even HP!

Thanks for all the input.

I think GaryA hit the nail on the head in my last post, when he mentioned doing without the scanner

and using a digital camera.

I have experimented using my Canon 10D and provided I get the camera parallel to the document

the result is perfectly good for what I need.

So I shall be doing without a scanner for the time being at least.
