My Thai wife of 20+ years and I have decided to quit the UK and settle in Thailand.

Can I do this: get a 3 month non-immigrant O visa and then, as soon as I arrive in Thailand, apply for a one year extension of stay, marriage visa, thereby avoiding all this leaving the country every 90 days rubbish?

You can get the single entry non-o visa based upon marriage from the London embassy by post or in person with no financial proof needed.

You can then apply for an extension of stay based upon marriage during the last 30 days of your 90 day entry. You will need 400k baht in a Thai bank in your name only for 2 months or proof of 40k baht income by way of a income letter from the UK embassy.
