Skype

Featured Replies

I don't have a landline, ADSL etc and I use my Nokia 6260 to connect to the Internet using GPRS.

Can I use skype while I am up on the Internet? :o

The chat function of Skype works quite well over GPRS, but unfortunately the voice doesn't (GPRS is just too slow). It might work over EDGE if you are really lucky - but not well.

Net2Phone a similar service may be a better option.

It uses less bandwidth than Skype.

The goods news is if we ever get 3G here its 384kbps, but 4G may well be out before then (really an ehancment of 3G) which they have NTT have got up to 1Gbps, so you may have to try others like mentioned net2phone

By the end of 2007, DoCoMo will also have decided the technical specifications for an even faster technology called Super 3G, Nakajima said. This will offer up to 100Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink speeds, and the network should be operational between 2008 and 2010, the company said.

NTT 4G

Where I live I have Edge connectivity, but even though much better then GPRS it's still unusable for VOIP. Neither Skype nor net2phone are usable.

Reason is not the speed as such, but the fact that the data tends to come in short but fast bursts. For any voice application it's much better to get a slow but very steady data stream. Everytime the data stream halts, so does the sound, giving you terribly broken up conversations.
